Well I messed around with it some more and now I can get Battletoads (and only this game) to start up and it will go perfectly with sound until the start screen where it freaks and the screen starts shaking like mad! I'll post pics in a few minutes.

i finally finished my first NESp, with the exception of the case. The battery is putting power into it, the screen lights up, I can see volume bar etc. I checked and the NES is receiving power as well as putting out the +5. The video booster also has power. The LM317T regulator does not power the controller. That whole set up that Ben has is for the screen only. You need 7.5v to power the screen and that is why he has those resistors/capacitors set up in that way. Just copy that circuit exactly and attach it to the screen as Ben says.
