Electric Rain received, "A HUGE monitor!"

Post by Electric Rain »

Yes it is true. I used to be stuck with a blurry 13" CRT for this computer. It also had a horrible red tint to it that faded to a slightly acceptable level in a few minutes. But it was still blurry. It was about 10 years old, and it was heavily damaged cosmetically with smoke stain, adhesive residue and scuff marks. The stand for it broke, got very hot and made a loud, high-pitched whining noise sometimes. The manufacturer was some company called CTX.

Now, I have an 18" Optiquest from 1998, with little cosmetic damage (a few scuffs), and NO operational problems. This thing is HUGE. And the best part is, I got it for FREE. F-R-E-E. My stepfather's friend had no use for it, and asked him if he wanted it. NEVER passing up anything free, and also thinking of me as well, he said yes. And here it is. I friggin' LOVE this thing.

He also got two keyboards from him, and one of them even has Hotkeys at the top. I'm using that one now. :P I'm also sitting in a chair that his company was going to throw away due to some cosmetic damage, (ripped cloth, mostly) and he brought home instead about a week ago. It's quite comfy. I may also get to have a gigantically large desk put in my room that he also got from work, because they were going to throw it away. That was also just a few days ago. There's not even anything wrong with this. We have all the parts to assemble it, and I don't see any damage on it. I think the rich ******* that was going to throw it away just got a new desk.

Several months ago I also obtained two other monitors, one 13" monochrome (nothing wrong with it), and one 14" color (has odd blue streaks through it). As well as two other keyboards that were in great shape. Moral of the story: I LOVE free stuff! To make this thread something more than a rant of joy, I'll end it by asking the following question. What kind of free stuff have you guys gotten before?

Once I received a HUGE 24" CRT from by friend's dad who is an engineer. It was made by Mitsubishi in 1989 and was basically a monsterous RGB monitor. It supported 1600x1200, and took three adults to carry it to my basement. Sadly, it fizzled out in a year or two. It was quite large though.

I've also gotten a variety of 486 computers and old 2gb hard drives (if you want one give me a PM.)

Once, I found a 17" Nokia (yes, the same company that makes cell phone( CRT in my neighbor's trash! I grabbed it and gave it to my grandma.

My current monitor is a 19" one, after getting it, it seemed HUGE! Now, it's not that big of a deal.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Meh, LCDs are cool... I have a 15" LCD for my other computer. But I really don't see the point. CRTs are MUCH cheaper, and their image can be just as crisp as LCDs. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but overall I still like CRTs. Oh, they also have a MUCH better viewing angle.

out of nowhere, my grandma just gave me a free computer (a pretty good one at the time) and a bunch of accesories, includeing a 15" LCD monitor. dad likes LCD monitors so he traded his 17" really nice CRT for it so now i have a nice big free monitor. earlier when i first got my genesis (1998 or something like that) dad's freing had an extra 27" multi-use monitor and gave it to me for the genesis (and other consoles i got later on). that baby was huge! it had every kind of video input so i had it hooked up to all my videogames and movie stuff plus a cardboard-box computer (it was the best case i had :P ) for playing worms armageddon and making special effects for movies (it was so high tech, i pointed the video camera at the monitor for video effects and used sound test on an N64 game for sound effects :P ). then the computer broke and then a year or 2 later the monitor broke :( oh well, at least i got to replace it with a cheap 60" tv and the old monitor is a jackpot for any kind of electrical component or heatsink and it really beefed up my N64p

I despise CRTs. They're only good for MAME machines. Takes up as much room as two obese people.

Just don't let a little kid around a LCD screen. They think it's fun to poke it and squeeze it untill all the pretty colors come. Then they poke too hard.
