they work, but very poorly. For example, try translating "a fish swims" to spanish. Then, take the result and translate it back to spanish. There are other similar things out there.

If you translate a block of english text into any type of Asian langauge, then back into english, they call it "Engrish" because of how poor the translation is. People screw around with Altavista's Babelfish translator, translating and re-translating to make Engrish. I've seen threads in different forums that have page after page after page of engrish, and the original english that people posted.

It relies on proper grammer and formating. Altavista is a lot better than most online translators.

`Engrish` is not from just any Asian language, but more specifically from Japanese. Because of the pronounciation of `English` into the Japanese katakana system (style of writing and saying foreign words) the L gets changed around to an R (sometimes). Reason being that the Japanese r/l sounds the same. If you want to say `Love` the katakana would be `rabu` With the `ra` and `bu` are seperate. There is also no V sound in the Japanese alphabet, so they replace it with a b-ish sound. B and V are the same in Japanese. Just like L and R (NOT Left and Right). For example, Write/Right and Light are the same.
Anyway, Babelfish is a pretty good translation system if you know the language you are using, it usually has grammatical errors translating. However, keep in mind that you are usually translating literally, and not translating the true meaning of what you are saying. Everything has a meaning, that is what needs to be translated.
And finally, Engrish is a term used when a Japanese person tries to speak japanese or when something from Japanese gets translated strangely into English. The reason is the subject verb sentence structure of japanese is almost the opposite of english. Example: `I love you` into Japanese `I you love`. Or `I want to see the Tokyo Tower` into Japanese `(I) Tokyo Tower see want` . Also, a lot of times in japanese, the subject is left out in conversation and sometimes writing. For example in a diary... blah blah `I think I love him` into Japanese `him love think`
