19" monitor combined with 7" circuit to accept componet

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

19" monitor combined with 7" circuit to accept componet

Post by rcpitlane »

Hey guys,
I want to make my own wii portable. From what i can find, the wii will not put out vga so i can't just hardwire it to the db15 on the monitor. But I have this little 7" lcd from a cheap wallmart dvd setup for a car. I have it apart and it seems like there is circuit board for all the volume control and standadard rca input's. This gets wired up to the 7" screen driver. Couldn't I somehow use this board to intercept my wii output and display it on my 19" vga screen?

I'm having a real hard time finding any info on the wii and vga. I can see the VDigi 2 cable, but what is that cable doing and can I just make it?

screen controller boards are not interchangable. Wii outputs rgb, though. You should be able to get VGA out of it fairly easily

That's what I thought. I have tried soldering to it yet though. I have a NTSC, does that still output RGB? Or is it YPbPr?

What I am trying to figure out is if I direct wire the wii mainboard to the vga port on the screen, will I be able to use 480i and 480p signals? Or should I just solder and try it. I can't seem to find any info on anyone who has solder a vga cable to the wii board. I only see people buying cables, that seem to have some sort of circuit in them (like vdigi). Since my wii will not have a console shell, I can care less about the cable since I can hardwire it.

I've still been googling but can't seem to find anything on anyone trying to wire it for vga. Everyone is just trying to make cables. I did find that some monitors seem to support ypbpr signals over vga so I'm going to look into that. I guess that all the wii laptop projects I'm seeing are using screens that come with compononet hookups. Like the little dvd player screen I have.

wii vga cables containa very small ic, 1.5 inches by an inch by memory. The reason i have so many problems is its not true vga, most screens (every other screen i could find other than the one i chose for my wiilaptop) worked fine, the screen i chose gave fairly nasty scan lines, id say jsut buy a vga cale, they are 20 quid and iv eshorteend mine down to just 5 inches. before you go tearing you screen apart jsut make sure it works ok with the cable.

good luck :). Im going to my robotics club tonight and the guys there are taking some ncie high res photos of my wii p, ill be sure to take one or two of the vga setup for ya :).

US NTSC Wii consoles don't output RGB, only component. You'll need a component to VGA transcoder.

Your Wii VGA cable most likely has transcoding chips in it, noise from poor sync separation will cause lines like you're talking about. Try tapping Y directly and run it through a LM1881.
