Avatar uploading
I was really surprised to see that I only can "Link off-site" my avatar.
Suggestion:
Activate avatar uploading feature of phpBB.

Re: Avatar uploading
I'd say no on this. It would just eat up more bandwidth for the forums, which are already using a ton of Ben's bandwidth. It's not too hard to upload your avatar somewhere else (photobucket, imageshack, tinypic, etc), so I don't think it's really necessary.

(Not everyone is lucky enough to have a 1920x1080 resolution monitor and a fiber-optic internet connection.) Try to keep avatars lower than about 150px by 150px and signatures under 450px by 200px. Think of the 56K!
Your signature is not 56K friendly
64M320N3:
A loading time of at least 3 seconds just for your avatar is not 56K friendly. As a .gif, it would weigh in at 10 KiB, not 16 KiB as a .jpg right now...
And why is that?
Because you guys don't care!
And why is that?
Because the quote above is a "formality", only a recommendation (and not clear enough about the meaning of "Think of the 56K!").
I don't want to apply for yet another service only to put my avatar online here. This is inconvenient. I expect more comfort as I have to tolerate ads (this is no complaint about the ads).
It is not my goal to abolish avatar linking.
I request avatar uploading as an additional method.
If users wish to make use of avatar uploading, they automatically make sure to stay 56K friendly. I suggest 150 x 150 px, 8 KiB.
If the size limit stays at 6 KiB, then, lifeisbetterwithketchup, your avatar is also too big. This can be inspiring, optimizing your avatar to fit into the limits.
If you cannot stay in limits for whatever reason, then you still have the possibility to use avatar linking.
I guess this won't hurt too much.
Re: Avatar uploading
You don't need to register to host an image online. Just use tinypic or imageshack, both are free and don't require creating an account.painkiller wrote:I don't want to apply for yet another service only to put my avatar online here.
The "think of the 56K" doesn't mean that everyone needs avatars that are super small, we just don't want 2MB .gif images that kill dialup users (or even broadband users). If someone uses dialup, they're used to the slowness. We're not all going to change the file types of our avatars and sigs so they can save a couple seconds. In fact, if they really want to save time, they can disable avatar and/or sigs all together on this page.
Re: Avatar uploading
I was talking about the actual physical server, you know, not the thing you host on?
Not internet connection. At all. This would make the servers bogged down and would perhaps call for a bigger disc. We run a dedicated server here, so it is already really expensive. (Well, Ben and Spongey do. Not me.
)
Also, my image is small enough. Smaller than most of people's avatars here. Why most of us don't use .gif rather than .jpeg really depends on preference, but I don't because it only is in 256 colors. I drew it, so I kind of like having full color.

Re: Avatar uploading
JPEG: (3,539 bytes), 24 colors.
GIF: (2,135 bytes), 256 colors.
PNG: (3,985 bytes), 24 colors.
The winner, png. WHY???.
I perfer the extra 446 bytes giveing me a full non-compressed image, with all the color.
EDIT: Scrue tinypic, imageshack.us rules.
Tiny pic only gives you 4 images to upload. imageshack unlimited.

Re: Avatar uploading
It is one month old. that is not old.
It was on the front page. that is not old.
I am making a valid point. It is revelant.
I had some important info to place about the three file types.
Thank You very much.
I also said something about tinypic and imageshack.us.

Re: Avatar uploading
The only problem with image hosts is that people copy the image preview page URL, instead of the direct link URL like the tutorial tells them to.
When you use an external image host, make sure to copy the direct link to the image. The "upload succeeded" page should have this clearly presented.
