PS2p with Port-DVD Case?

Post by n1teblad3 »

Hey there, (Its my first post hehe :D ) I was contemplating on making a ps2p or not. At first glance everything looked 'managable'(Even with my noob skill  ) although the question that been on my head for a while is "What case am I going to use?". I was thinking maybe buying a portable DVD player then taking out the 'DVD guts' out of it and squeezing the ps2 mobo in there and hardwiring the AV outputs to the DVD player screen. Another one of my dilemma's is the DVD drive. Is it possible to replace the PS2(or modify it) to come out of the original DVD slot?(Basically the DVD drive slides out instead of it popping open out the top)
Hopefully you understood my question about the DVD drive :?

So is this idea worth a shot? Or is it a just a lead balloon? :|

(I got the idea from this website  http://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=25503.0 (Scroll down a bit )

EDIT:How come I can't use HTML on these boards?

I dunno if a DVD player would be big enough for the PS2's guts, but I'm sure you could get the player to read PS2 discs if you were to do some chopping and re-soldering.

BTW, this thread will probably be moved to the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube board, so check there if you can't find it here.

Thanks for your reply. Whats the dimensions for the ps2 mobo etc. anyway?(L x W x H please! :D ) I was afraid it might not fit, but i gotta give it a go. I live in NZ(New Zealand if ya not familiar with the abbreviation :P ) so ordering a case is out of the question(Speaking from a money-wise perspective.-Hey we all aren't millionaires like Ben! ). I was thinking I could save the trouble, by using the DVD case... :?

What would I need to 'chop and re-solder'? Just the little laser/scanner thingy? (Sorry I'm not familiar with the proper terminology  )

Oh yea, is there anyway to manually move my own thread, or do I have to wait for a moderator to do it?

No, you can't. You can't do that kind of reckless hack crap. It doesn't work that way.

So what do you suggest I do? Look for a DvD player that pops open like the ps2 drive? I think the 'chopping and re-soldering' is a great idea, but i don't have that kind of experience yet :(

What you could do is take the DVD drive from a Phat PS2 and use that.

I mean they are both PS2s so Theoretically it should work.

Don't quote me on that though.

That is exactly what I'd suggest. However, many DVD players still need the main circuit board for the screen to operate so you might have a hard time finding one with enough room in it to fit the PS2. Aside from that, I think it's a pretty clever idea.

Why's that?(I actually thought it was just a small TV and a dvd player soldered together  ) Are you saying that the board for the TV is in the bottom mixed with the DVD drive?

Also, for the controls, do you think it would be best to drill a cylinder type shape in the case(where the controller ports usually sit) and attach a wireless ps2 controller?(By that I mean attach the sensor there) I don't want to take away the best part of a ps2(Its not a GameBoy  ) by putting the buttons on the actual case.

My last idea for it is to make some brackets or hooks to make the DVD drive flush with the previous hole for the old one.

Hows that? Seems pretty perfect to me. Whats your guys' opinion.

Hehe finally. Someone that realizes I'm clever after all

The built-in wireless receiver is a good idea and something I'm planning to do as well.

Awesome. Great minds think alike :D. I was thinking again(Yea i know, dammit  ) and encountered another problem.(Im making a blueprint first before I actually order my Port-DVD.Got the PS2 already =D)
How do I connect the ps2's power supply to sap power off the Port-DVD's Li battery? Is it as simply as following a few wires?

What are some things to look out for when buying a DVD player for something like this?(It seems many people are having problems, because of RGB output etc.) Whats the better RGB,S-Video or Composite?

EDIT: Also, whats easier to solder out of those 3?(If that makes any difference)

The PS2 slim takes 8.5v, you'll have to check what your dvd player battery voltage is first.

RGB is by far the best quality. Though whether your DVD screen can take it is another matter.

Composite, it's two wires: video and ground, compared to red, green, blue, sync and ground for RGB.
