gameboy/ gamate screen mod

I have a gamate (taiwanese reverse engineered gameboy) with a dead screen, and since the original screen what junk to begin with, I thought it would be worth while to transplant a higher quality screen into it. what are my options, considering it's c. 1990 technology. I thought perhaps a gameboy pocket screen or gameboy color / gamegear screen. Anyone's thoughts and/or advise would be welcome.

If it's a close enough clone it should work with a game boy screen. Other than that, no ideas.
