NTSC 64 playing PAL games! update: screen alive!!!

Post by OhSnap! »

hey everyone,

I am just starting my n64 portable build for a school project (I am in year 9 btw) and i have one goal- to spend as little on it as i can get away with. Using some the sources i have found for free and cheap stuff (I wouldn't making the mistake of leading people to the again, so don't ask :D ) i will be attempting to keep it under $50.
for the next week or so i will be pooling together all of the resources i need.
So far i have:
-access to a cnc mill for the case (from school)
-a viable battery i got for free (only 4000maH though, so i may keep looking)
-great black glossy paint(already had it)
-lots of grades of sandpaper (free)
-a sh1t loads of wire (worth $35 bucks but the person at the electronic shop only charged me for a single meter- 25c)
-all free samples of the pth08000 and pth08080 (there are 6 of them)

not much but it's a start

questions:
-do people put plastic or glass over the screen to protect it from damage? i considered making it a flip screen but it wouldn't be as cool in my opinion as people would be like "oh it's a giant ds  "

more to come

i dont put anything on the screen to protect it, i dont really think you need too; unless you throw around your systems like SS in his videos.......

Cheapest case you can get is a free case - like the case the N64 came in the first place. SS used the N64 case for a number of his systems. You can get everything you need for a portable cheap, only things that aren't are the batteries and screen - so those are key as to how cheap your system will end up.

BTW - had problems with uploading large .PDF files on Wordpress, didn't like them, so broken them into smaller chunks now (work fine now) - if you need a guide for your N64 project, have a look on my site mate.

See I highly doubt you can build one for $50 the economic64 (or whatever its called) is $130 american and thats cheap. A battery alone costs $30-$40 if you want high capacity. Anyways good luck

You can build it on the cheap if you can pick up a few good deals, or if your friends family have stuff hanging around they dont need, e.g
old camcorder battery n charger
portable dvd player that doesnt read discs (for charger, battery and possibly screen)
and I just picked up three n64's for 1 australian buk off ebay yesterday

well basically i have set the goal of $50 with the knowledge that i would go over budget. i believe trying my hardest to build it for $50 will allow me to keep my spending under control. I will be forced to not settle for a price that i do not want to buy something for, allowing me to keep waiting for a better deal and/or compromising.
And i am also very proficient in the finding of free goods

well say i found one with av, what other important things should I look for?
well i assume to look for a resolution of something like 640x480, an aspect ratio 4:3 and low power usage.
anything else?

It proves the stability. :P Oh, and If its sunken into the case, it should be fine from just about anything.

update:
I have just found a 5" lcd portable tv to buy on ebay uk. The reason I looked on there is because I am going over there in a few days and I can get it shipped to were i am staying.
But from past experiences I have learnt that providing details about an auction so people can give me their opinion on the item isn't a good idea, so how can determine whether the screen will be any good? I don't want it to be as bad quality as the intec screens or something.
