Yeah I don't see why that's odd either. They have different versions of the genesis 2. Even though the model #'s are the same, the mobos are different. I own 2 different versions of the genesis 2 and one mobo is several inches smaller then the other (and no, I'm not getting the genesis 1 and 2 confused).

Uh... version 2 of version 3 would be called version 4, that's why ;)

Not really. There are something like 10 total revisions (probably more, I don't feel like counting) of the genesis, but when someone refers to a Genesis 3, they are (far more often than not) refering to the third form factor of the genesis, which had at least 2 or 3 versions.

If you'd like me to rephrase, then here goes:
There are 2 or 3 different revisions to the Genesis 3 form factor. Mine is different than the one posted.

Not as bad as the PS2, how many versions are there of the first revision? I think around 12 :P

Even if the Genesis 3 is a crap knockoff from Majesco; the Model 1 and 2 MDs/Genesis had loads of revisions. For example, Model 1's had versions with a 2 part glue chip and SCN68000 plus EXT port, 1 part glue chip, SCN68000 and EXT port, 1 part glue chip and EXT port and MC68000 or HD68HC000, MC68000 or HD68HC000 without EXT port, enhanced and non-enhanced VDP versions, versions with and without a resistor tied onto one of the 68k pins, and a late version with a square 68HC000 processor and MD2 style combo chip Glue Chip/VDP.

They can definitely vary a LOT.

That said, if you waned to make a portable from an MD3, it would be much more accurate than a GOAC ... but far from perfect. You'll still have the irriating mono audio and weird random bugs. And it'll run a good bit slower than the real deal (more lag).

The Genesis 3 was only DISTRIBUTED by Majesco (and perhaps mass-produced at their factories). There are SEGA logos all over the Genesis 3 board pics, and on the chips. It's a Sega product, just like the first two models.
Also, the Genesis wasn't made to put out stereo sound in the first place. The Genesis 1 only had mono output. Only Genesis 2 had the stereo, and nothing used it. (I am using "nothing" figuratively, I'm sure things did use it, like the 32x and Sega CD.)
That said, the Genesis 2 is probably still the better choice, for the reasons mentioned above. Plus Genesis 3 can't hook up to Sega CD (nor 32x, I believe...)

Genesis 1 had stereo coming through the headphone sockets as I recall.

Ah. That could well be true. Didn't think about that. I do believe you're right (it's at least a stereo socket, I think). Kinda odd now that I think about it...
