If you don't want to melt it. Some people don't use fans though.

If it is big enough for the chips, I guess it would work. Try these eBay listings.

Is there an echo in here?

You could omit heat sinks if you want a convenient hot water bottle-thing.

What about using those... oh, what are they called? The things you put electricity into and one side gets cold and the other hot...

Anyways, for a chip near the surface of the case that would keep it plenty cool.

Why couldn't you just keep the original heatsinks?

Peltier element? I wouldn't advise it - if the cold side gets too cold it can easily go to sub-zero temperatures (means condensation will start forming and you don't want that with your electronics). Also needs a chunky heatsink on the hot side, and about 100w spare power ;)

Yep they're called peltier elements. Heres a neat project involving one: http://www.tripoint.org/kevtris/Project ... index.html

There was an article in Popular Science a while back that gave instructions to make a beer coolie into a beer cooler coolie with one of those and some tinfoil...

Yes, you can cut down heatsinks, they're usually aluminum, so they can't be too difficult.
