Post by lovablechevy »

i know there have been some threads about the playpal, but it was never clear to me if anyone ever purchased one. i just got one in the mail yesterday.

is there any interest in it? i can post pics and a review if anyone is interested.

i also have the mega drive portable on the way and can do the same thing if there is any interest.

just thought i'd test the waters!

ok, so nobody let me know if they wanted pics or not. but seeing that this has been viewed almost 100 times, and there is a thread with a link to buy the mega drive portable, i thought i'd go ahead.

i'm simply gonna post pics. if anyone has questions, feel free to ask and i'll try to answer.

Well, yeah. On the back, you can see where the ROM chip is, thus one would use that to install a cart slot.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Very interesting, it seems that the master system on a chip and GOAC both have thier own LCD controller on the chip. I can see what looks like a lm358 op-amp on the megadrive portable board (the small 8 pin chip), does the unit have a stereo sound output? The megadrive looks as though it could be cart slotted with the radica rom pinout. I will try and get hold of one these so i can have a play with the rom chip using the radica cart slot pinout.

both units have mono output with the speakers. i haven't tried headphones on either to see how they sound. the mega drive might output stereo through the headphones. i'll try that at some point today and let you know.

Is everything clearly marked on the board? Also, do you know where there is a schematic for the genesis and sms chips used in them?

heres a big question, whats the build quality like? does it feel solid or cheap?

i think a cart slot may be very possible on there.

they are pretty sturdy. i like them a lot.

unfortunately, the sound has stopped workin on my mega drive hand held. i think it's from when i opened it up. haven't looked into it too much to fix it tho.

i keep meaning to load a picture i took to compare it to genesis carts... i'll try to remember to upload it when i get home tonight.

a few questions about the megadrive/genesis portable

Post by papasmurf45 »

Where did you get your mega drive portable? would you reccomend it? I love the genesis and i've really been thinking about getting one of those but i wasn't sure if the battery life or quality would be nice (how well built it is) thanx for the pics and hopefully a reply it seems like a great little device.

i really like it a lot. but i haven't messed around with it all that much. i've read that the battery life is really good. the build feels nice and sturdy to me. i got it from some online shop. just do a search for mega drive portable and you'll find places that sell them.

alright thanx so much i was just wondering where you got yours because some of them switch ristar and sonic spinball around. And i've heard about some freezing issues and stuff but i think people just expect to much from a pretty cheap device. http://www.gp2xstore.com/ProductDetails ... 3&CartID=1
probably gonna buy from here since its a little cheaper then play asia. But i do get sonic spinball instead of ristar so that kinda sucks.
