Xbox 360 With Built-in LCD

Post by orbytel »

Hi All,

Im not sure if it fits into the 'Portabliser' categeory, but I thought id share it with you anyway.

I have been planning on making a 360 laptop, and to become a little more comfortable with the workings of them, ive been purchasing RROD xboxs off of ebay, repairing them and selling them for a small profit. Even so, I thought i would do a few smaller projects first to get the practice in (as suggested by many people on these forums).

I have been looking around for screens, and was able to get my hands on a couple of 7" LCD screens for free. The screens were built into car headrests, and an in-car dvd player with a 7" lcd (I just had to remove them from the car myself).
ImageImage

I found that one of the headrest LCDs was cracked, and I was aware that the the dvd player had died. When i opened the dvd player, the pcbs were completely fried, and had flux leaked over all the components (dont ask how they managed that... your guess is as good as mine).

Anyway, I ended up doing some customisations to the inverter board from the cracked headrest lcd. After some careful modifications, I was able to connect the ribbon cable from the dvd lcd, and bingo! works a treat.
Image

My plans for the two lcds were for a ps2 portable, which has come to a standstill as im having issues with the powerboard (its a fat ps2).

The second screen ive decided to use on an xbox 360. But, as the screen is only small, I thought I would put it directly into the side of the xbox 360 case for something a little different.

The 360 will still require mains power, but the plan is to run it with inbuilt video, say when on holidays without needing the tv, as well as being able to run it through a tv when at home.

So first things first, hard wiring the lcd to the motherboard. I ended up using standard molex connectors to the xbox's 12v power, and also connected a molex plug to the av pinout to the component output. I have run into a problem here though, a pinout guide i found showed that pins 5 and 7 are the component output and ground, but with these connected to the lcd, the xbox flashes the 4 red lights showing that no av source is connected.

If anyone can help me with this, it would be great. Obviously there is another pin that needs to receive a signal, in order for the xbox to register a valid connection, im just not sure which one. Also, the screen only supports 50hz, it runs in black and white at 60hz. It does support s-video, but im unsure if it will make a different, or if the xbox has the output for this on the pinout (i couldnt find anything).

(note the hot glue- can never have too much glue!)

I have been able to get a picture by connecting the av cable and wiring it to the lcd through an rca plug, shown below:
Image

As soon as I get the av issue sorted, the wiring is complete. Also, as the lcd inverter supports an IR remote, im attaching the original headrest panel with the function buttons and ir receiver. The inverter also supports multiple AV inputs, so I will be connecting an av jack on the case for an external input for AV2 (who knows, it may come in handy some day). With the wiring now at a standstill, the next step was the case.

I removed the metal plating on the inside of the case, and cut out the hole for the lcd using a template. This is to be positioned above where the dvd drive sits, to prevent any heat damage from the cpu heatsink.

I have also taken a sheet of heat shield from a ps2 powerboard and cut it to size to cover the lcd inverter to prevent any contact with metal parts on the dvd drive. Another issue I ran into by removing the metal sheeting, was the case not sitting flat. I ended up having to hot glue some stacks of washers to the inside of the case to act as supports when the case is screwed together.

So, thats where im at right now.

I plan on having a sexy glossy black case with the lcd panel. Ive started painting using a painting guide i found on these forums.

Here are some pics of the case in progress:

Ill keep you guys updated with the progress, and I as said before, if anyone can help me with the av issue thatd be great.

I don't think I can help you with your A/V issue...

But no lie, if this works, it'll be totally epic.

P.S. I'd say, if possible, to just go with the other way you wired it up. Just roll with whatever works.

Cool mod and nice clean work. Can you post a pic of the LCD connected to the controller board? Were the cracked and good LCD's the same model?

will get pics of the lcd up soon. I fixed the lcd issue with the av input- it seems pin 24 needs to be grounded out in order for it to select the component mode. I may have to put a switch in to turn it on and off, unless i can find a way to wire it to the on/off switch on the panel on the front of the lcd.... anyone know if this would work?

quick update

Post by orbytel »

ok, just a quick update.

This thing just keeps going :)

ive now decided to add speakers to the system too, whats the point in having a 'portable' xbox with no sound?

Ive purchased some usb powered speakers with headphone jack, volume control etc, which ill be putting into the case too. Ive taken all the measurements, made some modifications to the steel chassis of the case, as well as flattened a few capacitors to make some room.

Ill take some more photos in the morning, the case is nearly done too :)

i only started this thing thismorning, and im well over the half way mark!

Ps. Yes, i do have a job, but i cut the top off my left thumb with a scalpel when fixing an xbox, so im off work for a few days. how ironic.

haha luckily the top part of my thumb was still partially attached! no pixie dust for me...

Heres a quick update of where the project is at, I apologise for the bad pictures, its night and the flash seems to make the images go grainy.

Here are some more pics of the case, fully painted with the lcd and buttons attached. . The case just needs a few more coats of cut and polish and it should be good as gold- the only thing ive noticed is that finger prints and smudges really show up on the glossy black.

Image

I mentioned before that ive purchased some speakers. Ive taken them apart, and they will be installed internally. The great thing about these speakers is that they have controls for the audio, and a headphone output, all on one compact pcb.
Image

The guts:
Image

At the moment I MAY only be able to fit in one speaker, which I have placed here:

Image

ive had to flatten some caps to fit it in, but no major hassels.

The speakers are powered by usb, but have a standard headphone jack input, which ill be wiring directly to the av output. The speaker pcb will be powered by the rear usb jack (hard wired), and placed here:

Image

The power button, volume control, headphone jack and power led have all been removed from the pcb and have had wiring soldered to extend them, and place them on the top of the xbox in front of the hard drive. This has by far been the trickiest part, as there is VERY little space to work with, using such bulky components. Luckily, the top grate on the xbox has around 1inch to work with above the dvd drive. This also prevents the controls from interfering with the hard drive, faceplates etc. I also didnt want to have a whole heap of knobs and buttons on the xbox under the lcd.

Let me know what you think!

Hey all,

I started a new job last week, so ive been kind of neglecting the project. I started things up again yesterday, and thought id post some pics of where the project is at.

The audio controls are all wired up, with the exception of the power button, which was too long to fit into the case above the dvd drive, so im going to have to source something a little smaller. the pwr led, volume control and headphone jack are all wired in, with ide ribbon cable to extend them from the pcb which is hot glued in behing the dvd drive (see above pics).

All i have to do now is wire the audio pcb to the usb jack and the audio input to the av output.

I thought id post some pics of the near complete case, im not sure what faceplate ill use yet, so ive just chucked on black gears of war one for effect ;)

when i finish ill put up a vid on youtube so you can see it in all its glory!

I wonder if this was ever completed. This is exactly what I wanted to do with mine, after I fix the RRoD of course.

Actually, yes the project was finished.

I have it sitting in my office, I just never got around to posting back on these forums, to be honest I completely forgot about it. It wasn't until I received an email letting me know a post had been made that I came back and took a look!

I was going to take video and post a link to youtube, give me a couple of days and ill post it.

It's not the exact same as above, I ended up modding the rear of the case a little, with additional outputs for vga, component, svideo and a 4 port usb hub.

Wow, really?
I thought this idea was long abandoned. Sorry.
Congratulations on your mod, it looks pretty awesome, BTW.
