Nintendo 64 Custom modding, leds, custom case NOT portable
hey i've just started modding out my nintendo 64 for practice, does anyone have wiring diagrams, suggestions, or anything else on doing cheap high end modifications? i was kind of hoping that i could do a custom case, and led glow
Building a custom case is not that hard. You just gotta build yourself a vacuum forming table. I made mine for $50, but I used some heavy duty MDF which costs more than other wood. If you end up making a table, I would recommend MDF and seal it well with silicon caulking to obtain maximum suction. The MDF works well because it's solid and has no air pockets (Its basically just compacted sawdust). You'll also need 0.080" Polystyrene Plastic. Its what I was told to use and works well.
For The LED mod you wanted, you would need a semi-opaque plastic. You'd have to ask someone else what type as I have no knowledge of different plastics. It would be difficult to form it into a shape you could use because you need a solid block of plastic. Maybe you could make a mold with the vacuum table and then melt the plastic into the mold. I doubt that that would work, but you could try it. OR you could just cut the plastic shape in the shape you need and then insert it into the side of your case. It would be a little tricky, but you could do it. I might even try it, would look amazing if it worked. Good luck!

Some people like it, others don't. Fact of life. And what was the point of expressing that?bacteria wrote:I don't see why people like LED glow in their systems, I think it looks tacky. Each to their own though.
Oxzgen's right, though. To get the maximum glow effect, semi-opaque or frosted plexi is much better than clear. It will actually diffuse the light through it. Being frosted also makes it easier to hide joints, etc. when you're making a custom case. It's easy to get a frosted appearance: Just sand or buff the inside of it and scratch it all up, then use finer and finer stuff to make it uniform.

Do you have any prior electronic experience? just go for simple people! if you aren't satisfied then just make another one until you are, Like shockslayer. he's got 4-5 laying around just because he wasn't satisfied then he made 3 wii portables because he wasn't satisfied!
Good luck on your project, I hope that you finish unlike most of the n64 portables that get started around here nowa days.

Xbox 360 Portable would be a hell of a difficult one. Heat would be a major issue as those things get really hot. Good luck on that one!minnesotamoder wrote:i found estreetplastics.com when i was searching for a good plastic former and they sell some pre-frosted plastic that looks a lot better then the sanded plastic. as for the leds.... yeah its just my preference, im practicing with a few nintendo 64s before i move on to my xbox and xbox 360

Go for nes or snes portable. they are fairly simple, and pretty easy. buy ben's book i got mine on amazon for a total of $9.27. best book I have ever bought. O2 is right 360 would be very difficult, and xbox isn't exactly easy either plus it is massive.

He's doing it for practice, I wouldn't think you'd have such an issue with people trying to learn portablizing skills by doing basic mods first.bacteria wrote:I don't see why people like LED glow in their systems, I think it looks tacky. Each to their own though.
And Minnesota, may wanna host those pictures at a place that everyone can view!
