Sega GameGear AC adaptor help

Post by BetaWolf »

Hey guys, I used to own a Sega GameGear. A year back, however, I was playing with the audio connected to an external audio source, powering it with a Sega Genesis Model 2 or 3 AC Adaptor. The result? The display died completely. Coming here to ask for help, I found out later that a capacitor had popped.

Well, I'm getting a whole new GameGear soon, and I want to know how to prevent this while still being able to use an AC adaptor, so I have a few simple questions:

Could the external audio (my boom box) have had anything to do with this? I had it connected via a common audio cable to composite red and white plugs.

I'm aware that the power rating on the MK-2103 I was using is 850 mA, while the power rating on the GameGear is 300 mA. How much of a problem can this cause?

Is there an AC adaptor made specifically for GameGear?

Use a Master System AC adaptor.

I doubt very much your external audio could have done that. The GG is sending the signal out, and it sounds like you're just using your headphone jack for that. That shouldn't be a problem at all.

There is an AC adapter for a Game Gear. I'd have to do some digging, but I may have one I can part with. I'll let you know if I do.

As long as the voltage of both AC adapters is the same, then it does not matter what current limit they have (in mA). The plug is the same, and I also think the polarity of the plug is the same (- on the outside, + in the inside) so youre basically just using an AC adapter that can provide more current than the Game Gear will ever need.

Even the voltage can be a little off. It'll just make the voltage regulator work a little harder/hotter. Just don't get the polarity backwards.
This is the internet. It means nothing. Don't believe otherwise.

The genesis 2 maybe 3, and the 32x adapters are the same as a GG. All the OEM brand ones stated their compatibility on the side on the box.

Hi, I found this page on Google, after trying to figure out which what AC Adaptor to use for my Sega Game Gear.

I made an account on these forums just so I could help the rest of the people who find this link, by saying that the AC Adapter polarity for the Game Gear is: Tip (+) positive, Outer (-) negative. And the adaptor is 9VDC.

Which I found to be opposite of my genesis adapter. This might make some sense that the Electrolytic cap blew on the original poster if he was using a genesis adapter to connect. Electrolytic's can explode if polarity is reversed. Anyway, good luck and here is a great link I found for fixing Game Gears that have problems with the capacitors (ie: ghosting on the display) like mine does.

Hope this helps people out, later.

Are you sure about the polarity? It must be USA specific then. I got one from Europe, and the master system adapter it came with has the following diagram: + (O -. I just noticed that after plugging another adaptor because the master system one seemed to have a cable problem. I may have just obliterated the poor thing.
