Ever want your own videogame store? well I'm doing it!

Post by Triton »

I know many of you will think this is just another of my crazy ideas that wont go anywhere and that is where you would be wrong! This is my lifes goal and i have been working on the idea for several weeks now and am in the process of actually finding a real retail location in which to open shop, first some back info

THE IDEA:
It all started with my mom and her telling me that she was sick and tired of running her ebay business out of our house and having it full of crap all the time. she mentioned thinking of buying a place in agency (tiny little town that we live next to) to put her store in, they wanted too much and that never went anywhere.

fastforward ~6 months, we are still sick of the above and i come up with the idea of finding a place in downtown ottumwa (the big town that is slightly further away than agency and actually a decent sized city of 25k or so) because the downtown area is pretty empty and there are buildings that might be available. then she mentioned the idea of me having a shop area in her store, this got the ball rolling so to speak.

PLANNING
I instantly fell in love with the idea of owning and operating my own store, a friend of mine owns a store downtown and does relativly well at it so i made it my first priority to go talk to him about various ideas i had and to find out more about possibly available buildings.

From what i learned a building was going to run us somewhere around 30 thousand dollars possibly as low as 25 or less if we play our cards right, it sounds like a lot but most houses cost a good deal more than this! and here is the OTHER reason i fell in love with the idea so readily. nearly all of the buildings downtown have at least one or more apartments above them, some as many as 4! we fix up the building and finish the apartments, i live in one and we rent out the others, BOOM alternative income! that keeps operating costs down. plus i have dozens of other ideas that i can and will impliment as time goes on

THE STORE
My store will be primarily videogame sales and trade-ins. i will stock everything from the classics (snes nes genesis etc) to the brand spanking new stuff (pswii60 so to speak). will of course also sell accessories and guides and things like that and possibly things like R4 DS m3 simply, modchips etc. you might say, "hey triton how ever are you going to afford all that stuff!" i have no idea! YET, probably a loan for the initial stock, and i have numerous sources to get newer games and systems for a fraction of retail price (think sub 50% retail price or less) but require large up front payments for lots of items (in the hundred to thousands of dollars range) so i am still working out how to pay for the stuff to put in the store. another thing i am thinking about stocking and selling are CDs and LPs and computer games hardware etc and POSSIBLY offering a custom PC building service and minor PC repair (data recovery, virus removal and crap) at some point in the future

im going to cut it short(lol) here. this is only a small sample of what i have goin on in my head about this at present. any ideas and suggestions are MORE than welcome, i need all the help i can get to make this a gods honest reality!

I will do my best to answer any and all questions about this as well!

do a online component so that people like me can buy stuff without flying to the states :D ,seriously though get a good supplier and make sure they can keep you supplied, lots of businesses fall over and die because of lack of stock. a good accountant will help you in the long run as well.

You're still in college, so I recommend you take some microeconomics courses, and maybe some business management stuff, too. Perhaps even consider it as a minor, simply because it'll definitely prepare you in the long run. And make sure you're financially stable going in, seeing as positive investments can always go awry, no matter how sure the bet.

Good luck man, I'll have to stop by next time I'm in Iowa. Now I just need a reason to go to the godforsaken place...

I already have an ebay account and paypal set up, plus an account on liquidation.com. i am not concerned at ALL about lack of stock, just lack of FUNDS for stock  honestly probably better than a quarter of my total revenue will come from ebay related sales, and more than 50% of my total stock from ebay itsself (resellers market, my mom has access to it, and large lot items on regular ebay) with another large chunk coming from liquidation sales on the aformentioned website, and the rest coming from suppliers in china (a possibility anyway) and the ubiquitous garagesales/auctions for a small portion. as to the accounting portion i will have custom software (courtesy of skyone in part) to manage my inventory and probably business software and excel for everything else. my mom will be sharing the floorspace with me and will be a full partner in this buisness venture and will be of great help to me on that sort of thing

as to what CTfan says, ive already taken macroeconomics last term and am in business essentials this term! will also likely take some computer repair sort of courses along with possibly something related to small busineses after this term is over.

current financial preperations involve dumping every single paycheck i earn (120-200$ per week) into savings, when i hit ~1500 will be putting 1000 into CDs or some alternative to them, keep a minimum balance of about 500 for random expenses and whenever it gets over 1000-1500 take that extra 500-1000$ and invest it in some way, earns WAY more intrest than sitting in savings (3-8% likely versus ~1-2% for savings) ive been trying to kurb my spending as much as i can but the volvo needed fixing and i have another prom to go to and had to get some stuff for that lol.

Do not sell systems above PS2 XBox and Gamecube!

Be the "old-skool store" and only sell the old systems like N64 and stuff, if people wanted XBox 360's they would go to gamestop.

Gamestop does not sell N64 so then they would come to you.

This would lessen the money you needed for initial stock, and you could sell portables that you made too for like $500 to stupid people!

not selling the new systems would be a literall deathknell for my store, plus with there being literally only ONE gamestore in town (gamestop) i would have to be an idiot to not knock a big fat hole in their business. i can beat them on prices, on tradeins and damn near everything else!

plus the last "old school store" went bankrupt, not so much as bad business (my friend said he actually did REALLY well) as bad business management and budgeting skills

++ making very high profit margins on damn near everything its hard to lose money that way lol (eg lots of 30-50 pswii60 games selling for 200-400$ avg = 12-15$ per game, less than half of retail and in most cases less than half of used price)

It really would be foolish to not sell what's hot right now. Old school games are awesome, but honestly the next gen stuff is where the money is going to be.

Who else here would buy from Triton if he had an eBay store? Raise hands!

I would not be opposed to offering benheck members discount, wouldnt be 5 above wholesale but a decent chunk off of retail (10-15%) would be do-able i think. i like most of the people on benheck but there is no way im going to risk hurting my business to do favors lol

killgood, please only post if you have somthing good and useful to contribute, your just clogging up my thread as it is! 5$ profit on something that cost ~100$ is stupid and not worth doing. to be sucessful i need to maintain the higest possible profit margin while still having quality goods

Ok I have lots of pointers.

1) My parents started a business and did really well when the put in more money then it was worth. Your going to have to invest and don't expect a decent profit for a few years.

2) If money is your problem, find a investing partner. Someone who is willing to risk money to make money. This person would NOT have ANYTHING to do will business deals, only give you money to receive money in later years. You might go around and ask respected members of your town/city. Maybe a police officer or a lawyer. (My boss is a cop. He runs a 60's diner)

3) Never give up on dreams!!! You can and will make this happen.

4) HAVE FUN!!

i know the first 1-5 years are going to be primarily paying off loans and the like with minimal profit, its the years after that where it starts getting fun. the investors idea i do like and will be looking into
