K.C., Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis... Oh my!

Post by SpongeBuell »

Hi All,

I'm looking for people that live near Kansas City, Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis, or St. Louis to see if anyone knows of any good places to go to, since I'll be in those cities for a road trip coming up. I'm especially looking for tips for Dallas and New Orleans, since I'll be spending a few nights at each place.

In particular, I'm looking for a mix of what the locals do around there often, as well as tourists. Museums, food places, parks... whatever you can think of. Personally, I love just walking around downtown somewhere, maybe going to a place with some cheap food and live entertainment. But, like I said, any suggestions would be great.

Also, another nice thing to know would be the areas to avoid as far as crime goes. I know to avoid East St. Louis, but that's about it.

Thanks much for any tips,
SpongeBuell

Gotta check out the St. Louis Arch when in St. Louis.

Just a tip, the last time i went to the Arch. Everybody though that only one end of the arch was open. When the other end was open too. So eveybody was trying to get into the arch from that end. And there was no line on the other end. So we got in line first on the other send. So if you at the arch. And everybody is trying to get into the arch from one end. And no one is on the other end. Go the the other end. But do it discreetly and quickly. Because if people catch wind of you are doing. A mob of people will be trying to get to the side too.

Also check out Grants Farm, it's great and it's free of charge. They have a samll zoo there. They also keep the Budweiser Clydesdales at Grants Farm too. And for people who are of legal drinking age. If I remember right. They also have free Beer tryouts.
Here is the web site for Grants farm if you want to know more about it: http://www.grantsfarm.com/

The only thing special about TX is HEB. Wal-Mart is still better. D:

In St. Louis, the Arch is pretty rad. You can check out the old candy factory near the Arch, which is really cool. Watch out for dogs in there, though.

Coming through Dallas, you say? Perhaps a meetup when you pass through is in order.

There's a bit to do in Dallas if you know where things are. There's the 6th Floor Museum in downtown, where Oswald assassinated Kennedy. Dinner in Reunion Tower (expensive, but very good, and the place rotates; yeah, you read that right). House of Blues (typically something every night of the week, local or indie/mainstream), swing dancing near downtown on the weekends, not Six Flags (really, it's not that great), and a mess of other stuff I can't think of because it's 1:45 in the morning and I haven't slept in a while.

If you want shopping, that also pretty doable. Texas has more malls per capita than anywhere else in the world. Lower Greenville Ave. in Dallas is pretty neat; Sundance Square in Fort Worth is pretty amazing, itself.

Areas to avoid? South Dallas and West Dallas. South Dallas is the more ghettoish area. West Dallas is no-man's land.

Really though, let me know when you'll be coming through and I might be able to show you around some; my job offers some nice flex time and a break from clerical duties would be a relief. In the mean time, I'll think of more fun crap to do around here... when I've let my brain repair itself a little.

Kansas City? You should stop by and take a look at the car computer, I'm just 15 minutes out from central KC. ;)

This is the best place to get good barbecue - the Gates in town can't be beat. Art museum? Nelson Atkins. Very amazing. And finally there is the downtown section of KC called "the Plaza" - a block of shops and venues where you might find good local restaurants and places to blow money -- well, if you don't want to save it ;) A good place to go walking, it's very lively this time of year. Crime isn't anything to worry about there.
The only memorial dedicated to World War I veterans, Liberty Memorial. And finally the place that I find the most interesting, the Airline History Museum.

And that's about it.

Oooh, The Plaza isn't too far away from our hotel :)... we were planning on going to Arthur Bryant's for some barbecue... I figure since I saw the place on the travel channel, and it's been around for almost 100 years, it can't be that bad of a place :)

If you go to Connecticut, you can see the Noah Webster house, which is right in my hometown, West Hartford.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

Hey, well I grew up in memphis, we moved about 10 minutes from there. (only a 10 minute drive) and I recomend the peabody place (a huge mall)
And if you can find out how to get here, go to rendevous-best food getting place ever, best place to eat in town, last but not least call and try to set up a tour at the gibson guitar factory. Um, wolfchase mall is ok, nothing fancy though.

Oh and avoid south frasier, it's the ghetto down here.
If I knew how to do this why would I be asking you?

Thanks for the tips... I'm having a hard time finding where exactly that South Frasier place is, could you clarify a bit?

Um, if the place looks poor, then it's the ghetto, you'll know if you see it, Memphis has a high crime rate, I would suggest to stay out of the ghetto as it's technically very unsafe, just be precautious when you start to see places with graffiti everywhere. I hope that helps.
If I knew how to do this why would I be asking you?
