• FTP Client=CuteFTP (I don't think it's free)
• Web browser=Definitely FireFox
• Media player=I prefer QuickTime over Windows Media Player
• Video editing=...Don't do video editing on a Windows computer if you have a Mac.
• Games=Warcraft is good. My favorite is Warcraft II. Even though it can also be played on Macs.
• Alternate office suite=I would just use Office Suite. It's pretty much the only good Microsoft product.
I'm totally the 2008th member.

I use OpenOffice. I've only used the Word and Excel clones, and they work great as MSOffice substitutes. They can also read and write to .doc and .xls files, which makes them completely compatible with the real Word and Excel. I haven't had any compatibility issues.

A good media player, as already said, is VLC player.
Web browser - Firefox, duh.
My FTP client of choice (free) is FileZilla.
For video editing, I use Premiere Elements, but I've heard VirutalDub is good (and free).
DVD ripping/encoding - I use a combination of DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, RipIt4Me, Handbrake, and Gordian Knot. You can find anything and everything about DVD ripping and such at http://www.doom9.org

• FTP Client
Core FTP

• Firewall
ZoneAlarm Free, the one built into Windows is worth squat.

• Virus
AVG Antivirus (Comes with free updates forever, or until the new free version comes out.)

• Web browser
Firefox (duh :P)

• Media player
VLC Media Player for most things, WMP 10 for music (solely for the SRS enhancements), and Media Player Classic for Flash (full screen)

• Video editing
Movie Maker for really basic stuff (Though if you're used to iMovie be prepared for a huge disappointment and insult to your intelligence. iMovie kicks Movie Maker in the nads.). There's also that one Sony gives away.

• 3D redering
Google Sketchup, Anim8or, and Blender 3D

• Games ( fps, rts, you name it)
Don't ask me! :P

• Music arangement
ModPlug Tracker, Anvil Studio, FamiTracker

• Alternate office suite
OpenOffice.Org 2

• Dvd encoding / ripping
DVD Shrink

• Launching utilities
What? Something like a Dock?

• XP theme mods
I think they're all hideous or intrusive, maybe except for a couple cheap Aqua knockoffs. (I just use Windows Classic mode )

• Other stuff you deem necessary..
Ad-Aware, CCleaner, DeepBurner, Audacity, iTunes, QuickTime 7, TweakUI

For more apps look up the Killer Apps thread.

Yeah, I converted all the powerpoint templates that came with Office XP so they work for OpenOffice. The interface is less flashy than newer versions of Office, but it supports a lot more file types, and its free.
I use avast! for antivirus, AVG is good too.
I prefer Winamp for media, the interface is a bit flashier than VLC.
I don't have a firewall, and as far as I know, I haven't been hacked. I run Spybot S&D about once a month just in case, and Windows Defender is running all the time.
As everyone said, Firefox for browser, I have almost zero ads with the extensions I have.

OpenOffice or Abiword are good office programs.

SpyBot S&D is a great spyware/malicious executables remover.
