Gamecube/Xbox/PSOne Screens Shorting?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Gamecube/Xbox/PSOne Screens Shorting?

Post by joevennix »

Well, I bought an xbox screen (it's a PSOne knockoff), and once I opened it up, I realized that it when powered on, it would flicker on for a second, then shut down. When I investigated, it turned out that there was something connecting + and -, creating a ~60k resistance (it varies greatly), between them.

So, I messed around with that screen for a while trying to fix it, then gave up and ordered a new Gamecube one off eBay. I don't have a GC, so I had no way of testing it. I cracked it open, and sure enough, it shows the same problem: something is shorting the + and ground inputs.

On both screens, when I connect the battery wires, a tiny spark shows up on the + wire. Please help!!

I am using a 7.2V, 2000mAh battery from Radioshack. It worked fine for a while on my old PSOne screen (which I still have, actually, and is now displaying these same symptoms). Is there something wrong with the battery? Surely at least one of these screens must still work...

I'll bet both are still working. At what points are you connecting power and ground to?

I've tried a couple different. The GC/XB screens both come with presoldered positive/negative inputs. When those started sparking, I decided to use the socket in the front. Still didn't work. Also, there is a 60k resistance between the first two pins in the first socket. Is this supposed to be there? Can someone check?

60k is pretty large, at 6 volts it equates to only 100uA. thats micro amps. even if it is a short it wouldnt be causing any problems.

i think thats just the sum of the resistances of all the parts connected to the power jack.

also, resistance meters can sometimes be duped if theres a charged cap in there somwhere.

that said i dont have a screen handy that i could actually measure.

From my experience, using the spots that were already wired up never works for some reason. I just use the small spot on the back of the board that says "7.5 v" and then ground is just about anywhere.

Now do you mean using the same physical solder point never works, or the entire line? Just wondering for future refrence, seeing as I usually just forego the entire line when something comes up and end up just soldering to an alternate point.

Okay, I've tried bypassing the inputs, which got rid of the spark problem. Now it just doesn't turn on. None of them do. This is getting so annoying, I don't know what to do. My PSOne screen never did this! Now all of a sudden I've got three screens all displaying the same problems, and can't for the life of me figure out why. Anyone have any ideas?

does the inverter turn on or the backlight? you would hear that high-pitched ringing if it did
nope... can't think of anything I could possibly want to put in my Signature Block...

No, nothing seems to turn on. When I measure the voltage between the + and - contacts on the board, it reads 7.8v or so, I don't know what the problem is. The fuse isn't blown..

i had a similar problem last night with my PSOne screen. try this... take the screen that you corrently have hooked to a system, and turn it on and get video going to it. take a flashlight and shine it on the screen, i found that it was actually working, just that the backlight/inverter was dead. although, if you have done the LED mod, then this isn't your problem. anyways, thought i could share some info that might help you out.

:D.

Someone give this man a hand. I had tried this before, but hadn't thought of shining a flashlight directly into it. Thanks for the tip! Now I'm three PSOne screens the richer....
