12v car battery for power

Post by Lycurgus »

I realise the slim ps2 runs on 8.5v 5.5a. I'm trying to make a power supply so I can plug mine screen and ps2 into the car. (don't want to buy the actual adapter cause they are expensive over here in New Zealand)

Now it's not as simple as hooking the 12volts onto a 8-9volt regulator because the 78xx regulators (and most) are max 1.5a output. I found a part on the net (which I can't get) but the electronics stores here don't have it. It's a variable regulator that can output up to 5amps.

Anyways, I've read this from our dicksmith here and this is what it says

I've gone and bought me a PNP transistor 'mj2955' I've wired it up according to the picture at dicksmith, but no luck.

Whenever I connect 'C' to my power output the regulator doesn't work and 12volts goes straight through, and when I don't hook 'C' up the regulator works but it still doesn't power the ps2. All it does is light up the light, I press the reset button to turn it on but it just switches off. Does anyone know if I am hooking this up wrong, or could help me out with this thanks.

[EDIT] Okay link was wrong, changed..
