LED shaving, interesting thought.

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

LED shaving, interesting thought.

On the LED mod for the PSone screen, i was wondering if you have a low viewing angle LED, could you shave the led at an angle to spread the light evenly in one direction? If so, what would be the best angle on the leds? This could highly improve LED lighting for those of you who have modded your screens. :D :D

Crazy - I actually just had this idea myself about a week ago while trying to light a Hipgear screen. I can't find the LED I filed down right now, but it definitely improved the spread of light. The best shape (I think) would be a cutout cylindrical shape. What I mean by that is if you take a circular file and just go at the top of the LED with it, that's the shape you would want. Here's some sweet mspaint action for you of what I did since I can't find the LED.

You're dealing with lenses, and this way is kind of like already being in the middle of a concave lens which will spread the light. The original dome shape forms half of a convex lens.

You could get better lighting by being more precise and calculating how far in you should file and what the shape of the file should be, but really that's probably overkill. Giving it a shape like this should decently improve the amount of screen you can light.

The best way that I know of is to just scratch up the surface of the LED to difuse the light.

Well, the only way to find out is when i get my 20 leds from Hongkong. I'll experiment on most of them, but i'll use the regular leds as a control. I'll keep you posted, or you could look up some formulas about parabolic shapes. Just some simple algebra 2, and you could have a GREAT looking screen. :D :D :D
