Commodore 64 laptop, or handheld portable... look here!

Post by KANDYMAN-IAC »

People should look here and seriously consider simply turning this into a Handheld or Laptop Commodore 64. http://galaxy22.dyndns.org.nyud.net:809 ... index.html
http://galaxy22.dyndns.org/misc/commodo ... m_dtv.html

It accepts the standard PS1 LCD. Can use large storage and there is even an graphic operating system rather reminisant of early Mac OS. Called GEOS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEOS_%288- ... _system%29

In fact what this guy has done is made a super small terminal commodore 64 with a PS1 LCD monitor on a stand. I think it could be a very interesting handheld if someone was interested. And you could add a keyboard for data entry or textbased games on the go.

EDIT plus i also found this, it may be very possible to attach a harddrive or maybe even Compact Flash drive to the commodore 64, through here I found some interesting projects... http://www.64hdd.com/index_en.html

Well seems they haven't made a C64 laptop, yet. Their damn close though, can't argure with how close this is. Though I am suprised, you'd think that with the low power draw and the Atari laptop Ben made people would be making so many you'd hate the idea.

And while we're on the topic, anyone know where I can get the ICs for building that IEC-ATA adapter. I'd like to get around to building that thing soon.

looks cool

iassumed most people knew you could make a fully functioning C64 out of the DTV things, which are quite popular in the UK

ive never used a C64 really so ive never really looked into it

If someone were to make an ST on a chip....

now theres something i would rant and rave about

A C64 is certainly not the most insane Laptop idea I have at the moment.

I've seem some C64 to hard drive adapters, but they use the expansion slot on an original machine. I wonder if such a slot is on the Hummer thing...

a C64 portable the size of a laptop would be fairly simple (not nessacarily easy  ) to do

something that would be cool to do would be to make it into a Jornada style portable.
But with a docking device so it could use original floppy disks and the other larger nonportable hardware, but save things to and on-board memory (ie flash cards)

it would be really interesting to see something like that come about

Well from what I've heard the C64DTV PAL version, or version 2 for use in the U.S. has the contacts for attaching a cart slot. What you're thinking of Ben is likely one of the IDE64 projects. They use the cart slot as it's faster then the IEC or 1541 disk drive. And to make mention again the C64DTV has the contacts for an IEC device, the key reason I'm looking for a storage device the uses Compactflash cards.

I was playing with this a couple of months back, I even posted about it here. unfortunately the project kind of fell by the wayside with other stuff, but it looks like the community has come up with the new information on it so I may start playing with it again.

It does have connections for the IEC port on the board, I believe most of the adapters to connect hard drives to the C64 go through the IEC port. You'll just need to figure out which adapter does what you want.
