Dual core vs. single

Ok welp Im getting a new computer when I graduate this spring. I want to get an AMX processor (And dont tell me to get intel because I am not changing my mind since those turds helped Apple) The question is Dual core or not. I know that dual core is better for multi-tasking, but over all which is better? Should I go with dual core or not? Opinions? Facts? Fiction? I will take it all. Thanks

Only really matters if the software / os you use can support it

one core is better (you will have more cash for gpu)

two cores are good when you play with dvd/divx conversion, etc.

Gannon's pointed out the only short coming with any multiprocessing CPU. I'd say just know that you should run either programs designed for the SMP operation or go with an OS that supports it.... Like OS X or linux or BSD.

Make sure you back up your nice new rig with some good ram (OCZ, Kingston, Corsair), a gig at least, a good mother board (DFI, Asus, Gigabyte, Abit, MSI), and a good video card if your going to be gaming. Your whole computer has to be performing up-to-spec or it's just going to get dragged down by one component.

The Athlon X2 3800+ can be overclocked through the roof, and in my opinion is the best possible choice for a new processor. Quake 4 now has a ptach which makes it utilize both cores, and many more games will follow. Single-core will be the sempron/celeron of a few years from now.
