I've never tried it on a cartrage but when I opened up my N64, I too was having problems melting pens. What you have to do is jam the pen in there really good, hold it down as tight as you can for about a minute, then come back in a good 10 minutes for good measure.GameReaper wrote:well the melted pen thing hasnt worked out very well...
ive melted nearly 3 whole bic pens... and im guessing half the lighter is about spent... lol.
but ill keep trying.

well the melted pen trick has given me another option...
ive melted a pen in the left side so many times it is actually beginning to turn into a type of bowl with a screw in the center... i have found some hex head mini screw drivers, but they didnt fit because of th counter sunk scews... maybe ill just fudge it...
if that fails ill get the soldering iron...

Anything free is something worth saving up for...
i tried the pen method on my system and it worked wonders!
hoever, it did NOT work on my power supply. the screws were on too tightly and the plastic was too weak. it also didnt work on my jupwer pack, same reason (lately ive been taking apart everything related to my '64. lol).
so i used the soldering iron method on my PSU. what i did was take my massive 100 something watt iron thats not for electronics, but rather for like huge power supply wires or copper pipes or something (i dont really know what such a powerful iron would be used for). i heated the screw until it started to ooze deeper into the hole (because i was pressing down on it). then i used a screwdriver to pry the two halves of plastic apart while i was still keeping the heat on it. amazingly, i was actaully able to close it after i was done using the same method in reverse. you cant even tell i had it melted apart.
also, i used needle-nose pliers to get some of the screws on various things out. its pretty straghtforward. grab and twist. you can only realisticly twist them an 1/8 turn each time. so gather up your paitence.
or, the easiest way is probably just to drill the screws out. get a drill, somehow make sure it stays centered on the screw, and drill to your hearts content. eventually the head (which is now a ring) will pop off. depending on how the two halves go together you might need to drill a bit further, but you will know when to stop. oh. and make sure its a sharp bit. otherwise it will go very slowly.
when you want to put it back togehter... just use tape. who cares. the case isnt actaully important to the functioning of the game.
