Formal training

Post by Skipstone »

I was wondering if you needed any formal training with engineering or electronics to portabilize ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this has been answered before I appologize for the new post.

of course not! as long as you know the basics (soldering and a basic knowledge) thats really all you need! :D

although the best way to gain experience is to start with something small and easy (an OAC portable is the best)

Agreed. I took 2 years of electronics training, but the only stuff I needed to learn for making a portable, I learned in the first nine weeks.

It's when you learn to troubleshoot or make custom circuitry that you need more knowledge.

I can make custom turbo buttons with digital electronics skills, for example.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

very few people here have had formal training, and look it all the portables we have created.
Brain blast: Wouldn't it be cool if we had a tally of how many portables have been made by all the members, kind of like the member list, with a pic of each one, and its creator next to it. Sorry if this is off topic, but it just came to me, and it seemed like his question was answered.

Well, isn't that what the "Completed" list on PoD is for? ;)

Yea, spongey and I (him more than me, though) are on it. I suppose I'd better start working harder on it too, now...

about $10 for a normal one. i got a cheapy and it works fine.

when i first got the idea to portablize something, i had absolutely no electronics knowlege at all :P . i chose something relatively difficult (N64) and don't regret it because i learned much more from portablizing it than i would from something easy
