Franken-Dreamcast
------START STORY-------
ok so about a week ago i bought a new dreamcast because my old one had died a few years ago (way too long i know). i still had a few games, but some had succumb to heat damage from sitting in the sun or near a radiator (discolored "stains" on the data layer). so i went looking for some homebrew games and emulators online. i come to find out i had the revision 2 dreamcast, which will not play pirate/homebrew discs. but the revision 1 did. so i thought to myself, "waitaminute.... ive still got the motherboard from my old dreamcast, which was a revision 1"
i thought to myself, why not swap the motherboards!
so first, a little fill-in. the rev.1 has an all aluminum heatsink and heatpipe cooling sytem for the chipset, very good. but the revision 2 has just generic plate-heatsink and a tiny little fan no where near it...not so good...
fo first things first, i swapped out the cooling systems. but uh oh, the rev 2 fan was a 3 prong, but the rev1 was a 2 prong. so, i modified the 2 prong plug to fit into the 3 prong slot on the controller-port board (the fan plugs in here, weird i know) it wont boot..but when i put the 3 prong fan back in it does...... so i decided to swap out the controller-port boards as well. it worked! so that was good.....
then the unthinkable happened.... i accidently ripped the a/v socket off the motherboard.....i thought, "oh schmidt!" but i was lucky, i didnt rip any solder pads up or bend the contacts, so i resoldered it all back by touching the soldering iron to the contacts and re-meltng the solder. it worked, and i was relieved. then i decided while i was at it, to swap the orange LED for a blue one while the thing was still open, so i did that and reassembled the whole thing...low and behold: PERFECTION! it worked flawlessly.
my franken DC, a revision 1 motherboard, controller board, and cooling system, with a revision 2 GD-Rom, power supply, and case.
sweet.....now i can play pirat....i mean homebrew games and emulators.......
------END STORY-------
on a different note, i got ikaruga, and im thoroughly addicted... but i desperately want a good arcade stick to play it and soul caliber. i cant seem to find any good dreamcast ones except for the alloy stick (jebus its expensive and hard to find), the x-arcade stick (horrid button layout, and also really expensive), and the official sega stick (perfect, but once again, expensive and hard to find)
so, i decided, im going to find a sega saturn or genesis arcade stick for super cheap and hotwire the buttons to the guts of a dreamcast controller ive got. i would buy some happ arcade controls, but theyre expensive.
so whatcha people think?

Re: Franken-Dreamcast
Im sorry, this is the DUMBEST POST EVER! The "not being able to play pirtates" thing isnt true anyway, dcemulation has proven this wrong. Even when it was thought to be true the problem laid in the DREAMCAST GDROM, IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOTHERBOARD!!dragonhead wrote:------START STORY-------

You wasted your time. Wow why didnt you just switch the GDROM
I steal avatars.
Instead of getting a new Dreamcast? Well considering a used Dreamcast form EBgames cost a whopping $20, I dont see an issue buying a whole 'nother Dreamcast. Aside from that the only place I know of that sells parts is Lik-Sang, and its still cheaper to by a used Dreamcast from EBgames.Nightmare wrote:Dude, i assume your old dreamcast was broke because the GDROM wouldnt work?
Why didnt you just change that? Or if the psu was broke, change that?
Also why post a reply to a thread that is 13 days old?
