since I didn't see any other mention around let's not forget about the XGP.
yet another gamepark unit a handful of westerners will certainly buy.
(but why didn't they just give it a full keyboard?)

I read somewhere that the original company (GamePark) split up into to seperate entities when the heads couldn't agree on the successor to the GP32. The GP2X is the closer relative, made primarily with the intention that homebrewers could fiddle with it. The XGP is being released as an actual commercial unit for which games will be made by other companies.

For that reason, I think GP2X will be an awesome success, and the XGP will fail miserably.

The GP32 looked quite alluring, all accept the 128MB upper limit on the flash media cards it uses. Last time I checked they also had the full range of emulators from NES to Genesis and Snes all running reasonably well on it, along with a few 3D games such as Doom.

I'm very interested in the GP2X, and I will be even more impressed if it can, say, emulate N64 or PS1 games. Without any reasonable 3D capability, I will probably not buy it.

noone is sure of the gp2xs abalities to emulate 3d systems, but its pretty safe to assume SOMEONE is going to try psx/n64 emulation on it, it will at best (probably) work poorly. but any system pre sega saturn/n64/psx should work very well indeed. the 2 companys that game park split into are Gamepark (xgp people) and gamepark holdings makers of the gp2x, the xgp is going to be a miserable failure anywhere outside of korea

Got that right. That keypad is stupid and pointless. Is it a handheld videogaming system? Cellphone? Calculator? Coleco? What?

Well, I think a lot of GP32 people will wait for the XGP because it backwards compatible with the current GP32 games/software. I think in the end since the GP2X runs Linux it will have tons of more games and software. I preordered mine, it's just over 205, and I think it will be worth every penny. Since it runs Linux it will always have new things that can be ported even after the handheld is no longer supported.

That said it doesn't have hardware support for OpenGL like the XGP will, that in the end might make a difference. Someone already ported Quake 1 to the GP2X and must have used mesa which is a hardware implementation of OpenGL. But just that it can run Quake is pretty impressive, and sure that means more 3D games will be able to run on it.

One more thing that I wish it had was a touch screen so Opie or GPE could be ported to it. I'm sure the next handheld years down the road that GamePark Holdings will have more features, if for no other reason because it will be cheaper.

Thanx,
Stan

I hope that gp32z has enough units for all the preorders. I think this handheld will be huge on the home-brew scene.

I wish I had money. But I need other things more, mainly the arcade cab I have to build, which will be worth like 5 of these little guys.
