I think the reason people are mad is because sony's obviously about to finish Nintendo off, and Nintendo's still using the same playbook they used in the 90's.

I'm sad too, but it will happen.

I've said it before, nintendo should retreat to TV games. Sony will not touch them down there, and they can continue to release good games for their 'legacy' systems without much overhead. How well would a multi-mario NOAC sell compared to a generic spongebob/spiderman/starwars set? Nintendo could own a growing market and stick to their current playbook. maybe make a new 8-bit mario game in the process.

gamers are the losers, not the winners, now that gaming is owned by Microsoft/sony. I swear video games are all about the same these days... FPS this, and prettier driving sim that...hundreds of variations of the same 5 or so games... At least GBA has variety...

Nintendo can live off their handhelds for a while, the PSP isn't making much money.

Hell, thanks to Jump Superstars and the new Red DS, they made 100K sales in a week.

I was actually going to buy the GBM, but then I found out that it did not support GB and GBC games.
I still think its quite silly that people think Nintendo is doing poorly, and that they will fail like Sega. I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Nintendo makes more money from their consoles and games than any of their competitors. Nintendo is making lots of money. They are not losing money at all. They may not sell nearly as many systems, but the ones that they do sell, they make a lot of money from. That alone will keep them alive like it always has.

I've said it before, nintendo should retreat to TV games.
Nintendo could do that for North America, but in Asia they would get killed by the far cheaper famiclones. It would cost them (not much but it adds to the cost of the final unit) to make new 8-bit games for these tv games. It would also be difficult to keep the costs lower than say $30 (and who would pay that for a tv game).
Nintendo makes more money from their consoles and games than any of their competitors. Nintendo is making lots of money. They are not losing money at all.
Not exactly true, Sony makes much more than Nintendo at any given time. Nintendo makes a lot less than it used to which resticts its ability to experiment with newer technology (like the Virtual Boy, Nintendo was able to bounce back easily because of its superiority established with the SNES, and the gameboy line). If the DS doesn't have any good releases soon it could be a costly mistake (they don't dominate the market anymore, and they might not recover as quickly). Sure it helped Nintendo keep its footing against the PSP, but producing more gameboys that may or may not sell is not such a smart idea.
It really isn't about making money on the consoles either. Microsoft sold the XBOX at a loss of proabably $100 a console at release. Think about all those expensive parts inside that machine. Microsoft doesn't make its money from its consoles but its games (and because its Microsoft a milti-billion dollar business BEFORE the console venture). Nintendo can't exactly say the same. Sure they have some great titles but its not enough to make people buy their consoles, and that is why people think Nintendo is doing poorly.

Nintendo is on its last leg.
Nintendo is currently the ONLY company making a profit selling game consoles. They are not, by any means, on their "last leg".
I think the reason people are mad is because sony's obviously about to finish Nintendo off, and Nintendo's still using the same playbook they used in the 90's.
And unlike sony, they're making money doing it.

Close, but actually, Sony and MS are LOSING(!!!) money on their video game divisions.

Sony and MS are making money from other products, which allows them to continue to have video games divisions, but they are losing 100s of millions of dollars doing it. Nintendo is turning profit (though, less then they had hoped this year).

I guess you could say that Nintendo is the only successfull console manufacturer.

I believe the Nintendo consoles are only selling for 2 reasons:

1. Recognition/Reputation
I doubt a parent of a 6-year-old would buy a console that had games with titles like "Bloodthirsty Hell Dudes III" (ie PS* and Xbox). They would flock to Nintendo's game systems. Nintendo is really, in my opinion, the AOL of the gaming industry. They provide a "safe harbor" for families.

2. Proprietary Software
Mario. Yoshi. Zelda. Fox McCloud. They're all popular gaming franchises that exist solely on Nintendo hardware (Emulators and pirate games aside). Really it appears to me that there are some people out there who would buy new hardware so they could play the latest Mario game. Back in the day, Crash Bandicoot and associated games were proprietary on the Playstation. Since Naughty Dog sold all rights to Universal, Crash and Spyro have appeared on all 3 major systems and the GBA. Sales, I believe, picked up since then.

But I digress. My point is that if Nintendo licensed games like the Zelda series and Mario games to Sony and Microsoft so the games could be played on all 3 systems, sales of the Nintendo hardware would drop. Maybe not by a signifigfant margin, but by some.

Well I certainly would not buy the Revolution if I could play Zelda, Mario, Fox, etc. on the other consoles. Nintendo's exclusive games are basically the only reason anybody bought a Gamecube.

So the significantly lower price tag didn't have anything to do with it?

Nintendo has said that their death will come when they give up their signature gamelines.

I main reason I buy Nintendo's consoles is because I love their franchises. But they lack in third-party support, so I'd play my Xbox if I want third party games. Yes, PS2 wins in that area, but the PS2 doesn't have manyg ood games.

If Nintendo became a third-party and had their games on all systems, I'm sure nobody would buy their systems, even if their systems were cheaper. I know I wouldn't.

I don't understand that. Nintendo's consoles hardly ever break. But you always hear about PS2's and Xboxes breaking. Sounds like a reason to buy their systems to me. But they won't go third party, so no need to worry about that.

Again when the big selling point of the Revolution is that it can play 20 year old games you've got to wonder - what else does Nintendo have?? I mean, it's hardly REVOLUTIONARY to not support HDTV. What games will it have? Mario Party 60? Zelda 50? Metroid 40?

Other consoles and developers get reamed for making "no new games only franchises" but even things like GTA, GT, Halo and [insert franchise here] are all newer AND better sellers than the latest Mario or Zelda offering, which themselves are on FAR FAR higher in "sequel numbers" [ie: total titles made] than anything else. Has ONE SINGLE FRANCHISE emerged and defined itself on the Gamecube? No... it flounders around with 20 year old names whilst the XBox and PS2 rake in the real bucks with new stuff like Halo and GTA.

My personal opinion is Nintendo is relegating the Revolution to "for kids" status only, the major indicator of which is the lack of HD support (which kids don't care about but adults do) Yes they've got the money to do this, but I think it's really the pride that's driving them to. There's really no logic.

MARIO on the PS2 would outsell MARIO on the Gamecube by a large margin. Why? Because people actually OWN PS2s!
