Parole List |/\/| Re-"forum reform"
Moderator: Moderators
how about a public forum in which both moderators, admins and users can post suggestions for improving our forums. this keeps final decisions in the hands of the admins, but allows everyone that uses the forum an equal say. there is no reason at all for such a forum to be mod-only. just deal with spam and off-topic posts with a zero-tolerance policy (much easier to enforce on this hypothetical forum than in say, forum 42, in which the definition of spam and off-topic posts is a lot harder to determine), in which they are immediately locked and/or deleted without warning.G-Prime wrote:I kind of agree with...both of you.
I think that with this many mods a mod only form would be a good idea...but I also think that the people should have a say in it a well.
How about this. Make a mod only form to discuss new rules, how to deal with spammers, etc. and before you make a final decision see what the people think about it. make a poll or somthing...
nobody gets left out, nobody is stopped from weighing in, nobody gets to make decisions without consulting the rest of the users.

Jaytee, that's a great idea. At the SQN forums, there are two sections, that we might want to try here. Just a suggestion. But here goes nothing:
Updates & News- Discuss the latest updates & news of SpaceQuest.Net! Guest posts are allowed, no need to register!
For the most part, this is where the main admin (the Ben) places his news in addition to his site.
SQN Talks- I greatly appreciate your comments, suggestions and questions about my website. Also use this board to report a forum bug, broken website links, corrupted files, typo's and stuff like that. Guest posts are allowed, no need to register!
This is where we make suggestions for improvements for the site, forum, and community. Where threads like this one would go.
Now, if anyone believes I am being too strict, or making too much fuss, then I promise that I will do my best to easy off. I'm just a little new and am trying to make the best of my position.

That is a good idea, but I still think we should have a moderator only forum. I believe it was Dave who said that we should just use AIM, but some of the mods don't have it, and wouldn't use it. The problem with messaging clients, is that not everybody is on all the time. The odds of all 13 mods, and gannon, being online at the same time are pretty low, since some of us are in different time zones, some have dial-up, and some have classes. If we had a forum, we could discuss issues in private, without worrying about all of us being online. Some things that would be discussed in private are adjustments to the rules, new or future moderators, forum modifications, and problematic members. All decisions would be cleared with both the general members and the admin, so we wouldn't be putting any crap past you, it's just that some things should be discussed with moderators first(mainly new or future moderators and problematic members).
As for threads being locked and deleted, I haven't noticed an increase. Personally, I have only deleted one thread and locked another. In both cases I gave a reason, so the member who started it wasn't left wonderring. I actually think that this should be one of the moderator rules, because then nobody wonders where their thread has gone.
BTW HotDog-Cart, reading half a dozen posts about how you've changed, is just as bad as before. It's good that you've stopped using leet and making stupid posts, but we don't need to hear about it in every few threads.

nobody has taken the time to explain why a mod-only forum is neccesary for discussions like that.nos_slived wrote:That is a good idea, but I still think we should have a moderator only forum. Jaytee has a point. Why does this have to be a mod-only thing?

One of the main reasons is to discuss problematic members. For example, one moderator may see a member has a problem, due to personal differences, but the member may not be a problem. If this was discussed with other moderators in Forum 42, the mods may decide not to give the member a tempory ban, but the member would be left worrying. If we had a mod-only forum, we could privately discuss the situation, and decide whether punishment or a warning is necessary. Pretend that I got really mad at you, and made a thread in Forum 42 titled "Jaytee should be banned". It could be about a week before it would be locked and a decission was made, so for a week you'd wonder if you were about to be banned, and a lot of people would be embaressed by this, if it were their name. Don't say this wouldn't happen, because it definitely will in the future.
Just as important would be while choosing new moderators(if one has to be replaced). If we posted our plans for a new mod in Forum 42, every noob would be begging to be a mod, and the person we are thinking of could get their hopes up for nothing, if we ended up choosing somebody else, or no new mod at all. I will use you as the example again. Let's say that one of the moderators decides to leave the forums, and we need a new moderator. If I made a post that said "Jaytee should be our new mod", and then another mod turned around and said no, you would probably be mad at the mod(s) who opposed the idea of you being a moderator. Though you may take it without offense, some people may turn around and act like a noob, which would cause problems.
If you think we want this forum because we want to look big with our own private forum, that's not true, because it will be hidden and most people won't know we have it. If you think we want it because we want to talk behind your back, that's not true either. If we wanted to do that, which I know none of the mods do, we could use AIM or PMs.
As I have already pointed out, some things should be discussed privately between the moderators and admin, before anybody gets excited, worried, scared, or upset, about their future at these forums. I have already said that you don't have to worry about us making changes without letting everybody know. I can understand your points, but if we were going to use this forum as a top secret, power hungry, moderators take over the world forum, I wouldn't have suggested it. If we had something like that on our minds, we would just use an instant messenger. The reason I suggested this forum, was so the moderators can do what will happen no matter what, with a little bit of ease. Whether we have a forum or not, we can have private discussions, the only difference is that on BenHeck, the admin can still monitor what we are doing. Look at it like this, we either have a moderator forum on BenHeck, where gannon can still make sure that we are being good, or we discuss issues somewhere else, where gannon can't watch us. Which would you prefer?
I just previewed this post, and it is getting long, so I will stop here. Just think about the points I made in my last 2 hours of typing(I was also watching TV, I'm not that slow).

ypu have some very good poimts...although a locke d forum may make people feel a little incomfortable about what people are saying....I mean i know you guys are all talking about me in pm's (especially luc) and it doest un-nerve me muvh but the idea of mods all being in one place discussing us sounds a bit odd.......oh well the good out weighs the bad GO FOR IT!
