Re: I actually made some progress!
Sorry to bring up this old thread, but BCP still doesn't hold the record for most edits, I do, with 8 or 9 Edits to 1 topic (Who Is The Coolest Member Here?)bicostp wrote:I'm planning on building a PSoneP. (Was going to make a Radica Genesis thing, but couldn't get a cart slot or dead Genesis.) I plan on making it horizontal with the screen in the middle (a la GBA). I have tons of scrap sheet aluminum lying around, and I'm gonna use it to build a case. I just need some rather basic information.
1. What are the exact dimensions of the PSone mobo?
2. What voltage regulator will knock down the voltage from 12 to 7.5 V? OR Can the Intec screen be run on <12v? (RadioShack preferred, please.)
3. How much power does the PSone draw? (milliamps)
Thank you for your contribution.
So you know, here's a list of what I plan on doing.
*****************************************
-Intec screen mounted in the middle of a horizontal system
-Internal memory card
-Split a standard digital controller (I hate analog sticks, I don't know why.)
-Aluminum case with raised PS-controller-shaped section w/ a raised screen (if I have to.)
-R/C car battery (if it can handle 2 powerful motors for an hour, it can handle electronics for at least that long.)
-RCA Inputs/Outputs
-Plexiglass cd cover (safe and you can still see it spin!
I'll be editing this post, so keep coming back to read it.
I'll have a concept drawing up sometime today or tomorrow. It will probably wind up as something like Ben's CNC PSone Portable from the book.
So far I've got the Intec screen, the aluminum for the case, and basic soldering skills. I still need to get a battery, Intec screen, PSone, and I should improve my soldering skills. (I'm getting a second Intec screen because I want to simply modify my first one to hook directly up to RCA jacks. That way it can plug into anything, including my PSoneP (for 2 player action w/o a TV)
Where I plan on getting the parts
***************************
A/V plugs- Old VCR or RadioShack
Intec screen- Toys "R" Us
PSone- Thrift store, Gamestop, yard sale
Aluminum- Old cable routers
Miscellaneous hardware: Garage/Benny's (if you're from New England, you may know what this is) / Home Depot / Lowes
This post will most likely be a forum record for "number of edits".

I'm using a design similar to Ben's CNC psonep from the book, and the controls look fairly well balanced. Besides, I'm putting in a/v input/output jacks so it can serve double-duty as a handheld and console.
Has anyone ever re-used the PSone disc cover? (besides the "frankenstein" case-mods, of course.
)
Oh, another power question:
I take it bad things would happen to my psone if I ran it off of 9.5-10 volts? (I know the Intec screenpad has no trouble down to about 6v, so I just need to figure out what I need to power the mobo.)
I haven't made too much progress (aside from getting parts) because of school and the fact that I want to be as careful as possible with the components. (I'm really frugal and I'd hate to have to spend a lot of money on additional psones. Yet another reason I ddn't build an n64p.

OK, sorry to bring up this old thread, but I think it's better than making yet another question thread.
I have had a bugger of a time trying to find a darn 7808. I mean I can't find one ANYWHERE for chrissakes.
So, I figure I could use this battery for the PSoneP. I am 99% sure that it will work, I just want a second (and third and forth if necessary
) opinion before I spend 30 bucks on a battery.
Oh, and how long do you think it will run the PSone and the Inrtec screen? (I believe the screen draws 500ma, and the PSone draws about that or a bit more. All I know is that the screen adaptop puts out about 500.)
Thanks.
Oh BTW I plan on replacing the battery connectors with phone connectors so I can easily unplug the battery to plug it into the charger, unless I can make the charger work with the PSoneP so it will charge without having to remove the battery all the time.

Funny, I was going to post how to turn a 7805 into a variable resistor. Here is a page explaining how to get 8V from a 7805. The value they give for R2 is a bit low for 8V, so you have to use a bit higher value resistor. they also made one small mistake with the formula. It is Vout = Vfixed + R2[Vfixed / (R1 + Istndby)].

Look getting the PSone to run on battery power is about as hard as cutting your nails. All you need to do is connect the battery terminals to the positive and nevitive points on the mobo. I've done it and it works. Hell the only reason I dont have my PSp done is video issues.
As for the battery, Ni-CD sucks! Buy Ni-MH you can get the same style battery in MH on ebay.

Aah, thanks. Longer battery life and no memory effect. (Yeah I know Ni-Cad sucks. My old Apple Powerbooks used to run off of them. the battery life goes to pot in no time. I'm guessing I'd need a 7-8 volt power adaptor to charge it with? (I already have the adjustable power 300ma/h adaptor and a 9v quick-charge adaptor that came with my old RC Jeep.G-force wrote:that battery wouldnt be the best since it's a Ni-CD, it will die over time. you would be better off getting a Ni-MH battery like this one
And why do you need a 7808?
I would have needed a 7808 because the RC battery I have is 9.6 volts. The Psone would fry like an egg running off that kind of power, so I figured I'd use a 7808 and a resistor to drop it down to 7.2v.
But I could always use that battery you mentioned instead.
I know it's simple to get it running off of a battery. I just don't know the voltage tolerance, and I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum by not frying a pile of systems (one of the reasons I didn't make an n64p
Also, I would still like the equation used to calculate battery life. ( I'm forgetting to check PoD again) And maybe a brief explination. (I'm pretty good at math, but I can't remember equations to save my soul

Ok first off the PSone has a built in 7805, secondly I've run my PSone off of the 9.6v Ni-MH battery no problem.bicostp wrote:I would have needed a 7808 because the RC battery I have is 9.6 volts. 7805 regulators can work with a voltage input of up to 35v. That is according to the specs on the back of the boxes they come in.I know it's simple to get it running off of a battery.
