Anime

Post by Total Eclipse of the Toe »

Is anyone here a fan of Japanese animation?

Personally, I think its (overall) pretty groovy. Theres a lot of (usually) unique and interesting things, and its all very creatively portrayed. It's still quite a niche thing though- even though its gaining mainstream popularity, its still pretty much an in-the-know thing...

Did I just say groovy?

There most certainly is a middle ground, I'm an anime fan, but a small one. I'm way too cheap to spend outrageous prices on anime box sets. I prefer American animation anywhere from '28 (when Walt started it) to early 90s.

Well, yeah you're right there is a middle ground. What is was trying to get at was that when it comes to anime, there are the stauch defenders and the people that just don't like it. There's always the group that is going to think "cartoons" are for kids and leave it to the kids. Saying such like: If you watch it (w/o the kids) you are somehow childish yourself- its all a machismo thing IMO.

But more people should realize what really good animation/art can do to differentiate from live-action. Some really beautiful stuff can be done with animation- see pretty much ANYTHING Miyazaki has done, a lot of Satoshi Kon's stuff, Cowboy Bebop, etc...they REALLY look good and have a very unique look, one that isn't seen much here because it isn't really fully realized often.

I usually get the occasional anime DVD at Best Buy. Good prices on stuff there, every other place runs 30 for 4-5 eps  :?

I am a huge fan of anime. I watch it all the time. Right now I am watching naruto (too bad its not in english yet...yay subtitles) Most of the anime I watch I just download in japanese with subtitles, by the time they make an english version I have alredy seen the whole series. There are a few rare occasions were I go out to buy the english box-sets of an anime (trigun, outlaw star, witchhunter robin, hellsing, etc.) The only problems with box-sets is that they are a S*** load of money (it was $200 for the box-set of trigun...I could have built a whole portable with that much.)

For a ~26 episode anime, I can buy atleast 3 seasons of a cartoon, judging that its one boxset/season.

Yeah. Personally if I really liked a series enough I'd save the money and buy it. Otherwise I'd buy a couple of DVD's and then bail and be satisfied.

Or I'd watch fansubs (of unlicsensed series) There ar a lot of good shows that haven't yet/never will be licensed for release elsewhere but Japan, and you can see those via the magic of the internet. Whee...

I sit about middle ground. I really like some shows (FLCL, Full Metal Alchemist), but just hearing that something is anime doesn't get me too excited. It all depends on if it's a good show. I do quite enjoy a lot the manga (Hyper Police, Mahoromatic), but again, it really depends on the series

I'm a big fan, I know I own close to if not exceeded $300 in DVDs. However I know about people that say those things. My brother thinks its weird for me to watch anime with Japanes dialoge and english subtitling. I also have the whole series of Evangelion on VHS (english sub ofcourse) that I got from my cousin who said he grew out of watching animation.

I dont see watching it as childish. Its people that say that, that are dening themselfs the true. Think of it do you really discard everything from your childhood. Ofcourse not you still like the foods or places you go to and animated show/movies are just fine. In Japan they go in to the adult area with it (and I dont mean hentai), DBZ for example is targeted towards teens and adults (the people here are just stupid aiming it at 10 year olds).

Also if you want a price cut on some DVDs, try out Discountanimedvd.com I've got two Gundam series from them. They have free shipping on orders over $100. Its really a good place to go compare prices for say suncoast/media play.

Sundevil is a good one. They have very low prices for anime, a lot of which is both subbed and dubbed.

i'm in the middle ground but used to be a big anime nerd. the thing i dont understand is the japan/anime worship thing that some people do. there are such a wide variety of anime, both good and bad that i don't really get how someone can say "i like anime" without referring to some specific favorites. that's kinda like saying "i like music." yea, you might like music, but i guarantee that with some poking and prodding we can narrow this down and find what kind of music you like specifically. i dunno, whatever.

anyway, personal favorites are gundam wing, escaflowne, akira, mononoke, and trigun.

Anyone ever see Robotech? It has a following and shows made in both America (where it started in '85) and Japan. Its an awesome show, and has another series coming out sometime.

Personally (and this is just my personal opinion only) I'm not much into mecha anime (Full Metal Panic! notwithstanding)

As for specific genres, for me its similar to music, I will listen/watch mostly anything unless it is a genre I don't particularly enjoy. Usually I enjoy an anime series based on that "entertainment factor" you just can't rate on a scale or with a chart. Romantic comedy, action...pretty much anything that's well done.

The cheapest places to get DVD's are Best Buy. And online, the best place I've seen is deepdiscountdvd.com

I like anime with a good plot and good characters. There are some anime series people think are really good (and are of high-quality) that I dont enjoy because the characters do not appeal to me. That is what I feel about Full Metal ALCHEMIST (not Panic this time :P ) is that even though it isa really deep and cool series, I myself didn't feel any strong emotional connection to the characters.

And on a side note, (again, only in my opinion, lol) Full Metal Panic > Full Metal Alchemist > Full Metal Jacket > Whatever "Full Metal _____" is left

:P

Anime has been a huge part of my life since I was four and saw speed racer.

I like FLCL the most. But nothing much else on adult swim...except Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Both of which have dubs better than the originals.

I mostly download or read manga. Cheaper, I mean I bought FLCL with the special boxset + 2 mangas + 1 special manga = $140.
