Wanting to build a portable PC?

Post by legoboy »

I just did a bit of Googleing, and I found this. It looks like a good choice for the motherboard. It's smaller than most ITX motherboards, and packs a nice punch for it's size and power requirements.

You have isolated an excellent motherboard for building a PCp, at least when it comes down to size. I am using a motherboard from the same exact company for my own PCp project, except it utilizes a Geode 300Mhz CPU instead of the stronger Via chips.

One thing you may have to worry about is the power requirements. That thing needs both 5 and 12 volts to run, and potentially more than 4 amps. A laptop hard drive will add another .5 amps at 5v to the mix, and the PSone LCD uses .75 amps at 7.5 volts.

You can see such things in my "PCp project construction" thread. I have completed the internal circuitry, but have run into some problems. First, the LCD and motherboard will not run simulataneously; second, PowerStrip will not run on my chipset/graphics subsystem. Lucky me...

Half that after the LED mod. Just to point out.

I guess when youre talking about these types of power requirements, .4 amp is nothing to cry over.

Yeah, PCp energy requirements can be quite high...

What are the requirements of an average console portable, like a Genesis portable or SNESp?

A Radica takes like 50mah I think, around the same for a NOAC, then add the 350mah of a psone screen (unless you use smaller junk screens). Dunno about SNES though.

I suppose the LED mod would be easy, but I was to short on time to consider it. A 0.4 amp gain is not all that much next to the comparatively massive requirements of portable PC's.
