Hip Gear screens risky from this point forward

Alright, apparently the hip gear screens are not going to be useful to us anymore.

The screen I got was a ps2 screen, and it does the flippy stuff on screen after a while because of overheating. I looked at the pcb, and while the color coded wires are the same as the game grrl's, there are fewer resistors, and the wires are no longer hotglued on, they are on a connector.

It would seem like this would make the screens more advanced, but in fact it makes them impossible to run at 6 volts, they must be started at 7.5 and can be switched down from there. It also makes them extremely prone to overheating, causing the screen flicker and waves.

So unless you actually get to play with the hip gear for at least an hour before purchasing it to ensure that it doesn't overheat (or at least having the ability to look inside at the guts), I would advise against buying one until we can come up with a fix. If someone would like to help me, I will post pictures of the pcb, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm buying one of the intec screens from toys r us, should be here any day, I'll test that one and see if it's prone to overheating also. Here's to hoping that it's not.

Just because you can't figure it out, doesn't mean that they can't be used. My friend got one a month ago, and it works great.

I'm saying there's a good chance you might get one of the other versions. There's also a chance you'll get one of the versions that works, i'm just saying, until someone will help me, you're running a risk.

I don't have my intec screen yet, it's coming.

I can't put pics of the hip gear pcb up today, don't have a digital camera, i'll have to borrow my friend's tomorrow.

I took the back off and left it off, and accidentally shocked myself, and it hasn't looped since. If this really did fix it, that would suck, cus all i know is it was in the upper right. And my finger feels weird.

Even if someone did fix the problem with a fan or something, there's still the problem with it not working from 6v. It flashes white and then the screen goes black. It is possible to run it from 7.5 and switch to 6 volts while it's still on, it just won't start on it's own. The only solution I can think of to this is to add a 5th AA, which is fine if you're not working in a Game Boy case. Problem is, a lot of people are doing game boy mods, so we'd have to find a place to stick that 5th battery. Perhaps right above the battery case?

I have this new style board and Im getting the loop as discussed in my previous thread, I was running it from 12V so that is probably the main cause of this.

I have only run the screen for a few seconds at a time.

When opening the board I noticed that the back pcb had a green wire jumped from one point to another, its a different model to a previous version Hip I have seen, it has the connector for the two wires, a shorter orange cable connecting to the screen.

If running a 7v power to the screen will solve the problem I will locate one on the board and run it from there, if Im right I think the fan in an xbox runs off 7v (will check).

Not sure how old my screen is, I got it shipped to the UK from Canada by Ninjai

does this sound right? to get a 7v for a hip screen you could use the molex on the xbox and use the 12v in and 5v out to give 7v? rather than just the ground for the 12v.
Therefore connect in to 12v Yellow connector and out to 5v Yellow connector.

Someone just suggested this on another forum, I would like some kind of backup before I even think of doing this.

correction...i used 7.5 volts. but it can be run on 7 i guess.

And yeah, mine has that random green wire too.

And shocking myself didn't really fix it, cus once i put the back back on it went back to looping. But here's a fix for those using one not in a gb case:
a cooling fan or ventilation holes. A cooling fan would eliminate it, while ventilation might just make it not loop longer.

There might not be a better fix than that. Noone with any technical know-how will help with this =P so we'll never know.

Actually...here's a question for everyone with a hip gear and a looping problem: Are your hip gears from canada too?

That appears to be the common ground...if this is the case I guess we just shouldn't buy em from canadia...

I'd still like to work on a fix for this though, just for the poor folks who have one of these crap hip gears.

Wait for us to get our intec screens and test them before you go doing that... I'm just saying, don't waste the money til we know they're good >_>

My screen should be hear by say, wednesday or so. Damn weekends.
