Almost done...but a bunch of problems...

Post by goodie »

My NESp is almost done, I think. I'm having several problems though.
The case is about half an inch too thin.
It is hard to slide in the cartridge. I believe this is a result of the case being too thin.
The batteries holders are way too tight, especially with Ni-MHs. You have to use a screwdriver to pry them out.
The system refuses to even turn on with Ni-MHs. I think the battery holders are not making good contact or something.. It didn't have this problem before I gave it it's final battery holders. Anyone know of battery holders especially made for the slightly fatter rechargeables?

I am on the verge of just giving up and selling the parts. If anyone can possibly help me out with these things, then maybe I will be able to finish it....

What's the case? Pics? can't really help without an idea of the case looks like.

And for a battery holder I would reccomend one from radio shack, they even have one with a lid.

If you do give up and you are using a Hip gear screen, would you sell it to me? I broke mine :(

My case is this project box:

I'll try and get some pictures uploaded in a day or two.

I'm currently using five of these battery holders:

Oh, and the screen is a 3-inch pocket tv, not a Hip Gear screen.

ok i think you need a new case buy a 4 battery holder and a 1 battery holder

you can tell if there is contact if you put your multimeter on voltage and test on the battery holders leads

or you could buy batteries with tabs (same price)

As I see it you could:

Start over and make sure everything fits before making it.

Use smaller batterys or cut off the plastic tabs that hold the battery in.

And how many batterys do you have? Ni-Mh's only have 1.2V normally. That might not be enough to power the system. Try putting the batterys in and see if you get 5V going to the system.

As for the cart not going in, is there enough room? you might need to make the opening a bit bigger than the cart for it to go in easily.

And I have no idea what to do for the case not being tall enough. Try using the force to stretch the case or something :P

Anyways, good luck with your project, I hope it works out for ya :)

if the case is too small, mount the cart on the outside or have an external battery pack

If you are only using 5V in batteries, bypass the 7805, because it probably won't work under 7.2V.

I'm using 5 NiMHs which is 6v. And I don't have a 7805, I got me a fancy LDO regulator. :) The weird thing is, it used to run fine off 4 or 5 NiMH's. But it stopped when I attached the 5 1AA battery holders. Before I had been using a modified 8AA battery holder.

Things might go better in both operation and troubleshooting if you would take the time to properly organize and mount your components.

Never /ever/ touch a glue gun or a Dremel tool again. They are sloppy tools, and yield sloppy results.

Tip for the newbie: Do not bash another person's portable. ESPECIALLY if you haven't made one yourself, and since you only have 2 posts, I doubt you have. This is a forum for constructive criticism, not insults. If you don't like this person's work, and have few specific reasons that would assist the person in constructing their project, you need not pay attention to the thread, or bother posting within it.
Warranty-Voiding fun!
