multi purpose hip gear screen pad????
I was just wondering if it is possible to seperate the screen from the controller and just stip the cables coming from the screen and sodor composite video (yellow), audio left (white), and audio right (red) and DC power cables, making the screen multipurpose, and leaving the controller seperate in working condition?
Or would it b easier/possible to strip the cable at the end where u plug it into the ps2's "video out" port?
PS: here in the greater toronto area, u can find these hipgear screen pads at futureshop for $19.95 canadian!!!

Yeah, it's actually quite easy. You open the controller, cut the wires going to the screen, remove the screen close the controller. The controller will still work. You cut the adapter jack at the end of the long controller wire
you put the two wire out. You plug them to the corresponding wire, you do the same for video and audio and your done. Look at Ladyada thread on hip gear screen for this.

Multi use hip gear trouble
Hi, I am having a little trouble with making a multi use hip gear screen. I cut the wires going from the controller into the screen as specified in an earlier post. I then cut of the power dongle at the end and wired that to the wires and the screen powered up fine. I now have 5 wires left white, black, red, yellow and brown. My question is can i just strip a rca video cord and wire yellow to yellow, red to red and white to white. If so must I ground wires, do you know how to to do this. Sorry if the question is noobish but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here is how I did my first one:

As you can see I only have mono audio right now.
I striped a old vcr I had laying around for the jacks.

This addapter is from a GBA its 6V 1.2A so I may use one from a Nintendo DS cause its 5.2v 320mA and worked fine where as the 1.2A from the GBA seems to cause video problems after a few minutes.
I have many addapters around from 5.2v to 12 all with various mA ratings, so I'll find one that works nice.
I may even connect the 12v line up since I am not using it, that might also make my sound a bit louder, its fine now, but with too much noise around it gets hard to hear.

You should build a tabletop stand for that!

I must have been real tired, casue I just noticed I put the hipgear images on the page for the JuiceBox lol. I'll fix that soon
well I was going to make a case, so...
I have lots of ideas.
Remember in the 80's there was those video game units like football, pacman, and spaceinvaders and the were for the table top, well some had 2 screens for 2 player action. I was thinking of making a back to back unit of some kind.
I only have 8 screens, 1 wont stay on, 2 are WIP, and rest are still in boxs.

I'm really sorry to bump this topic, but I've been wanting to put composite video imputs on my hip pad and while I could probably pull it off with the information in ladyada's post and other info on this site, I'm a picture guy and I like to see what I'm doing before I do it, and unfortuanately the pictures posted by ninjai seem to be down, so I was wondering if maybe someone could post some pictures, or re-host the ones ninjai posted.
