New Forum Rules Idea

Post by Nightmare »

I was thinking we could list some new rules here and then the moderators could hopefully enforce them?

1. NO POSTING FORUM LINKS!
2. If someone posts about a question before they search, if they do it again its a instant ban.
3. Spam. If someone spams then spams again after being warned, instant ban.

I can only think of 3 but im sure between us all we could make this forum back to how it use to be!

3. Spam. If someone spams then spams again after being warned, instant ban.
4. SEARCH. If you need information, chances are your questions have been answered before.
5. Think before you post. Think "Is this necessary" and "Will this contribute" before you post.
5.5 (added after 6)Keep the posts on topic if possible.
6. If people are pissed off at you, don't make another account with a different user name. They will just get pissed at you all over again.
7. Keep all images (avatars, sigs, posts) CLEAN and PG. You may be 21, but chances are there are just as many 11 year-olds surfing as adults.
8. EVERYONE IS EQUAL, be they User, Mod, or Admin. I don't mean "you just signed up, so you get to screw around with the Admin panel", I mean everyone has a RIGHT TO THEIR OWN OPINION, no one is superior to each other socially. Mods and Admins just have more privelages, that's all.
9. Post count and/or # of portables made DOES NOT mean anyone is better than everyone else.
10. If a noob posts something like 'tell me how 2 use a ps1 screen with a gameboy", please don't yell at them. Instead, post a link to another thread with the information they need, remind them to search, and that's the end of it. Remember, you were a noob once, too.

That's all I can think of.

Oh, and I think we should overhaul the FAQ threads, or make a new topic called FAQ and put it above the book topic. :)

I'll edit this post as new rule suggestions hit me.

I'm in thew process of writing a few FAQ sheets and a new Guidelines to Success sheet. I'll post them when I'm done with them.

Ohh, IFR would be so beat.

"Oh, but I'm too lazy to search, so I'll just make another 40 threads."

I don't mean to hold old grudges, but the kid needs to get with it.

I find no problem in making fun of gay video games. But, its somewhat offensive to make fun of the people.

I am glad to see this thread.
I do not post very often and spend my time lurking and contribute when I can.
Lately, I have considered leaving this forum altogether. It has really gone downhill FAST.

Way to many post by people who have never build ANYTHING let alone a portable.

I visit less often, post even less, and get really pissed every time I do make a post. (Like when people that have never built a portable answer a thread. You have to build something first before you can ASSume that you have all of the answers.)

What happens to 90% of the posts now is that some one makes a stupid response to a legit question, that gets the post off topic and then it is all down hill from there.

If people just want to chat there are many, many places to do that.
Just stop holding us less conversations within threads BELONGING to people that are looking for needed answers to legitimate questions.

Forum 42 is free game use it. Stop chatting in the other sections.
If the thread asks for a resistor value, I don't think the person cares if you had fun at the dance last night. Or if you saw something cool on ebay.
Christ!! is it so hard to read the topic and ask the question, "Does what I am about to post have anything to do with the subject of the thread?"
Please resist the urge to go off topic, and when someone does tell you how much fun he had at the dance in the resistor value topic PLEASE DON'T chime in and say, you know I had fun too did you see John there?
Instead ignore him, a quick flaming is, of course, required but don't forget to answer the friking resistor value question.
Just flaming him is just as off topic as he was to begin with.

Sorry to rant but I really enjoyed this forum in the past and now I regret visiting every time I do.

We need to get the Forum back under control or start another one.

I think we should add a noob section and evrything goes there. In the other sestions heavy flaming and noob questions and answers deletion by moderators is required to get them under control. I don't mean noob in the "when did they join " way. I mean noob in the " which portable is easiest " way. The person that asks this never searched for anything.

If a thread askes " where do you get your LCDs" then this person should be flamed, informed of the search function, and the thread locked.

I visit many forums and in the serious sections no stupid searchable questions or answers are tolorated.

If you just want to joke and have fun go to FORUM 42. Stay out of the portable sections, they sould be for serious questions about that perticular portable.

Waaay to strict, IMO. a banning should be for those who are obviously there to spam, and only to spam. Maybe a temporary ban for repeat offenders of nonsearching, but a permanaent ban is too strict. I find that the more strict rules there are, the meaner a board becomes. For example, AtariAge has thousands of members, but only about 15 moderators (most can only do things in a forum or 2, and they have a lot of forums) and everyone gets along fine. Granted, the age there is a little higher, and people are a bit more mature as they are older (no offense, fellow whipper snappers) but there are virtually no flameward (excpet in Politics and Religion, which one could expect ;) )

how about
"5. think before you create a forum. think "Why do we need another one" and "won't this just be ignored and have more sub forums than members"
before you do.

My GUIDELINES cover almost all of this. And if they don't, it's common freaking sense.

But common sense seems to be ignored by some newbies.
