Automatic Can Crusher 2.0(ish)

Post by lusankyancitizen »

So, just watched the episode of the show with the automatic can crusher and came up with a good way to make it work. Not sure how the math works out, but I remember getting a lot of torque out of re-purposed drill motor assemblies the last time I needed to build something like this. So what think you?

A stepper motor might do the trick, but it needs to be able to overcome the initial amount of force that will start the can cruching. If you used a stepper motor in conjunction with a small gearbox, then it should work. Or you could just have more awesome stepper motors than I'm used to working with.

Seems safer than using a large cam to depress a foot.

a 205oz stepper with a 4:1 gear and a pair of 10T acme screws will do it just fine and with good control add limit switches and it can return for next can fast

you can replace a stepper with a windshield wiper motor most are 22:1~30:1 it will take a bit more modding and a basic H-Bridge controller
it will be slower then a stepper but with loads more tq

now tip it on it's side add rails (a feeder for cans) and a backing board with a slot say 10~20% bigger then a crushed 12oz can.
might need to add a IR beam to check for can when return is complete
chain drive might be cheapest way to start off

now hold it above a trash can and your done just feed it
