gamecube without disc drive?

Post by carbsdog »

am i right in saying that using a wiikey fusion or other modchips (maybe even a gcn one) it's possible to remove the disc drive entirely and load from an sd card? so all you are left with is a motherboard, regulator and modchip? and if you do can you just disconnect the dd and be done with it or is their some special soldering that needs to be done. also is their a guide to attaching a wiikey to a gamecube

Yes you can remove the dd drive completely. Yes it requires a lot of soldering and trouble shooting. It is not a beginner project.

so the only things you need to do are:
1. solder the wiikey to the gc motherboard where the dd would normally go
2. attach a sd adapter
that is all?

so everything goes directly from wiikey to dd port, except for pin 12 and 23 which needs a switch in between?

Pin 29 needs to go to a switch for the WiiKey Fusion.

Pin 32 needs to go to 3.3v.

The link has all the info.

so pin 29 needs a switch going to ground
and 23 needs a switch as well?
i am seriously confused here because the guide says on/off lid switch in for 12 to 23, and 29 to ground needs a switch. am i correct?

I am confused about this as well... that part is not clear to me....

Do you need to not worry about the DD lid pin from the GC and just worry about the one from the wiikey? Or do you need both of those pins? or what?

Real simple. The switch for pin 29 is to get the WiiKey to cycle on after the GC boots. The pin 23 switch is the lid sensor switch to cycle the GC for multi disc games.

Gotcha 2 switches both going to ground. Both in a always on state?

wiikey 29 - Ground (cycles device)
GC 23 - Ground (cycles lid opening closing to fake a disc change)

Are they both in a always on state to ground? Or always off?
