thanks a lot, looks like those little components nexto the 5v lines are voltage regulators, I will give those lines a little try after school today and post the results! I am thinking this fan is quite a powerfull fan as it caused the dvd drive to not work!

i was testing the little regualtor last nite with the heatsink, it gets terribly hot, so i thaut about putting a 12v realy in instead?

running from 12 will increase the noise but will also increase airflow.

i know, school can sometimes be anoying, but other times its very usefull! Still got 2 more years though! I am going to try the fan on 5v now, and see what happens...

I would like to add a couple of pins for power that are great. i actually use the 12v c9b4 and the accompanying ground and it works just fine for my xbox mod, and if you were to use a voltage regulator for it, you could get it to a more managable voltage for your fan. plus, they are switched, so it should fulfill your requirements. note: both 5 and 12v are shown, as well as a few more grounds. red is 5v and yellow is 12v. blue being ground

hi, i just tested it from the connections you suggested...

the cpu fan runs really quietly and the cpu temps shot up to 42when idling before i switched it of so i wouldn't damage the system. Under full load when the cpu fan is on full power the cpu temp is usually at a max of 38C while playing games. It was nice having the system running so quietly though! I thought of a few things I could do:

Keep that fan connected there and connect a few 20mm fans to suck air through the cpu heatsink? (i would be struggling for enough space though)

Attach a little copper heat pipe and an extra small heatsink to the cpu heatsink?

Use the 7805 regulator (which i dont really have space for and I dont like the heat it produces?

Could I use a resistor to step down the voltage for the cpu fan?

Buy a 12v relay, so when the console switches on, it powers up the relay, which connects the switch to the 5v line for the fan? (i think this is the best option personally but would it work)

Also what are the safe and average temps for the cpu and gpu?

I don't really use relays that much so i don't know about them, but i would definitely add even a small heat sink. the average CPU and GPU speeds that i found for the 360 were at about 40-45C peak temp at idle (leaving the xbox on to heat up, but still not having it really do that much) A small regulator such as the one below take up very little space, and you can get them fairly cheaply and for a lot of different voltages. they are usually only about 5mm thick, 10mm wide and long, so the are really small, and for a laptoped 360, they shouldn't take up too much room

i have tried with a 7805 5V regulator and i put it an quite a big heatsink, but it still grew really hot when playing (i burnt my finger when I touched the heatsink) ans i wouldn't be able to fit it and the heatsink inside the case.

I saw on ebay you can get little resistors for fans that bring the voltage down - would one of these work?

It should work. after going to your blog and seeing your pictures of it, i noticed that you are using the stock fan. you could save some space just using some smaller 40mm fans, and are you having the fan blow on the heat sink or pull from it? Having the fan blow usually has a better response. Also, try having a vent between the fan(s) and the heat sink. sometimes, that just seems to help

i take it you looked at the picture at the top?

well I have completely redone the cooling so it is small enough to fit inside the case, i have done as follows:

3x35mm 12v fans at the rear connected to motherboard fan controller that blow air out the back

2x redwings 60mm fans ontop of the gpu heatsink that are constantly on at 12 (but they are very quiet but push a lot of air down)

This keeps the gpu at a max of 31C (the new jasper chip)
For the CPU

I have cut down the original heatsink to fit inside the case and added a emachines d620 5V fan that blows air across it. The fan is very powerful, and keeps the cpu below 38C, the fan is also very loud

I also just had an idea - I could hook up the cpu fan with the 3x 35mm fans at the rear, and as the 5V fan can take upto 7v(although it gets loud), the fan port will only produce about 5v with these temperatures, so I am going to first measure the voltages and then try the cpu fan with it...

is the CPU below 40c during playing time?if so, then it sounds like it should be fine. 40c is still pretty warm to the touch, but with all of the benchmarks i have seen, if it is below 40c, it should be fine.

Also, it sounds like that might work. it is always worth a shot,right?

the cpu is max 38C when playing a game, i really would like to add an extra heasink though to get it the same as the gpu which is at 30C max when playing a game so I make the consoles life a bit longer
