Well, by heating them up really quickly I can imagine it could damage the battery very easily. Otherwise, are your connections just bad or did you fry the battery?
Was it just a Cylinder shaped Li-ion cell? Was it cheaply made? I got a couple off DX a while ago and they crapped out on me. I assume they are just low quality.

I solder Lithium-Poly all the time.

Solder iron set at 650 degrees. Solder already on both the wire and the battery. Flux added to both connections.

Solder them together nice and quick. No problems.

Now Lithium-Ion I haven't tried.

Well... a friend told me not to. tons of websites say not to. And after I did it the batteries just plain didn't work. (I need to confirm that though)

IF they have tabs you can solder to those... atleast that's what I've been told.

Well those tabs have to make a connection to the battery somehow.
I haven't really had any problems with li-pos, but I don't really know much about straight up li-ions.

Here in The Netherlands, its not possible to get Li-Ion Batteries.

But the salesman could only sell me a compact(read HUGE) block where everything was already attached to eachother and the only thing possible was to plug in a connector and then connect to your project.

He said that soldering li-ion could cause it to explode and therefor its not possible to get them here.

He suggested me that if i really wanted it, he could get this made for me, it would only cost €150,- so i thanked him and just bought some rechargable penlites 2700mAH really liked to have those 4700mAH LiIons though.

(can't i just import them?! or would that cause trouble if (hows that called) customs? check the package at the border )

Well those tabs have to make a connection to the battery somehow.

They're usually spot welded on. You can usually see like 4 little dots on the tabs.

i made a 7.4 V pack from 2 2200 mah cells, i cut off most of the spot welded tag and jsut soldered to the top of them , they charged ok but are untested discharging in there final fairly high current draw application (around 4 amps), how much capacity am i likely to lose?, would it be ok to continue using them if they didnt sustain too much damage?

posted here as i thought the answers given would be helpgfull to the subject of the topic and me !
