360 controller: Replacing analogue stick with a d-pad

Post by Gruso »

I'm pondering replacing the right analogue stick on one of my 360 controllers with a d-pad, for N64-style FPS control. I'm not sure how suited it would be to current gen FPS titles, but there's a certain XBLA release this week that I know would love it. ;)

I've done some basic controller modding before, but I'm not sure how to approach this one. Is it worth pursuing? Any advice / helpful links appreciated. :)

It's a good deal more work than what you've previously done, but it can be. I've done a couple of Stick/D-pad swaps before and it's more of a mechanical mess, all the work done to the shell, than anything really. As long as you have a Dremel, some epoxy, a second controller to get the D-pad shell section from and some time to hack and glue it all up you're good to go. Going about the inside part of the D-pad you'd have a few options from Tact switches to using a PS3 D-pad, but what you want to do with the controller surely can be.

Screwing up is one of the best learning tools, so long as the only thing you're not learning is how to screw up.
