Help with 15" HP VS15 flatpanel lcd

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Help with 15" HP VS15 flatpanel lcd

Post by Ferd64 »

I've wired the screen in accordance with the engadget instructions. Its turning on and going to stand by. Would the difference in brand cause a different vga pinout?

What's the difference between the vga Monitor ID, DDC1, and DDC2 settings?

i had the lcd video connector plugged into the driver board backwards. I would appreciate it if everyone would point and laugh at me.

Too bad we can't because we've all done something like that at some point. Last time I did something like this was put the jumper pak into an n64 backwards. At the time I didn't know that it just knocked it into sleep mode so I thought it was fried, and proceeded to take the whole thing apart including the cart slot relocation.

Looks like I spoke too soon. :(

The video is showing up, but the backlight is still turrning off after about 5 seconds.

Could this be contributed to the wire size used to connect the split sides of the board? It needed 7 spots extended so I used ide cable.

IDE cable is really small for power. I would try some larger wire, or maybe doubling up the wire if you don't have anything else.

So I swapped out the ide for some 10 gauge solid strand, and same thing. I know power is getting to it cause it turns on for a few seconds and i can still barely make out the display once the backlight turns off.

1) yeah. 10 gauge. Its what they used for the power supply in the engadget laptop.

2) Although I appreciate the kind words and help, my impatience for a solution forced me to........ do my own research :o

I found this happens to lots of LCDs due to an epic invertor board fail. The solution is to replace the capacitors on the power supply side of the board. I shall keep any interested updated once I:
-can get some caps to swap.
-revisit the "this isn't a waste of time and money" convo with the wife.

Great news!!! It stopped working!...........

Replaced the caps and it turned on once for 3 secs and it turned off.......forever. Getting nothing now. :( Reverted it to the old caps and nothing. Bricked inverter, if that's possible.

Does the screen itself show anything? It's easiest to see if you display something with a lot of contrast, and put a bright flashlight on the screen where there should be a light color or white.
