using store bought Nimh battery in laptop

Post by mesojin »

hi i have a older laptop that has a completely dead battery. I want to try to use some nimh battery i have to power the thing at times.
so what i have is a toshiba satelite pro 4600, it takes 10.8v to power the thing, so i figured 10.8/1.2 is 9...... so if i connect 9 nimh AA batteries in series and connect the poisitve and negative to the positive and negative ends of the taken apart battery pack (im gonna recycle the li-ion cell at local store), its all good right?
im not very savvy so i just plan to power the laptop, no need to charge the battery also (unless someone knows a simple way to :D )

if anyone has any tips or suggestions, all welcome!

oh and i know i can buy replacement battery for cheap on ebay, but i had bad expereince with them (stoped working in a week) so dont want to buy them, and i only spent 15 dollars on the laptop (didnt come with a HDD.... i put a 1gb drive from a REALLY old pc to get things to work)

NIMH cells from a shop wont work tall unfortunately(or if they do the charging circuits will quickly destroy them. The cells in a laptop are usually (unless the laptop is very old) Lithium ion, or if the laptop was very very cheap and quite modern it my be lipo. The charging circuits will want to charge 3 cells to 4.1 volts. each cell needs an individual connection for charging all the cells at the same rate (balancing).

It certainly isnt impossible to overhaul a laptop battery, but for a 15 quid laptop imo its not worth it.

If your interested in doing it there's a nice tutorial here: http://www.electronics-lab.com/articles ... dex_1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

well i could just charge the batteries using conventional wall chargers, and then put them back into the battery inclosure to fit nicely in laptop to get emergency power on the go; would this work?? (dont wanna damage the laptop)

yea the laptop is waaay too cheap to invest any money on lol

its actually a pretty good system if you run lighthouse puppy linux on it

sounds like it would work. probably wouldn't get a lot of time out of the batteries, but good for emergencies. plus you'd look cool for having figured out how to power it off AAs :)

I dunno about your laptop, but mine would most likely not detect the battery without all the circuitry associated with it. Im pretty sure that it "connects" to the battery with some kind of serial communication before it starts charging/discharging it.
