I'm glad I'm not the first one who thought of this.

There was that on a Mad TV episode a few years ago.

Unless it is docked to the keyboard part. Than you have to use it vertically.

Well there is that.

Does it really matter?

Portrait is better for internet browsing imo, allows for more of the page to be viewed.

But handheld, it has an accelerometer so it works either way. Or upside down, even.

I kinda like the upright position when it is attached to the keyboard. It would come in handy if you were typing up stuff.

I do really like the device. I would prefer having a hands-on with it, though, before I come to a conclusion if I would want one or not.

My first impression was that it was a giant ipod touch.
But With the iBook integration, I think it shows that this isn't the portable computer people were expecting, but an overpriced Kindle competitor.
Seriously, I could buy an HP mini 311 netbook with windows 7, 2gb memory, 160gb hard drive and enough GPU to play COD4 or WOW (which I don't) for $10 more than the 16gb iPaid.

Note: I have no desire to get one, so I haven't done much more than browse engadget for info, so I may have a couple facts wrong.

If it is like the iphone/touch, it seems to be tailored to portrait. The home screen and menus of the iphone are all portrait, and I have yet to see the ipad demonstrate otherwise.
Another kicker is no multitasking. WTF? I could see this being used like a netbook, and it would be the sucks to not be able to switch between multiple programs while doing something like a report.
The Touch is pretty much as good as you can get for its size and price, but the ipad costs as much as a netbook/laptop (or two) and doesn't really offer anything special. Now if it had a color e-ink display and an LCD combo screen, it would be justified, but as is, it is no more than "meh".

Wow, it's a giant ipod...and nothing more. It's all glitter and no substance really...buuut...I have this horrible feeling that there will be people (mainly apple junkies) who will buy them, what few that will sell anyway....

If this was a tablet format Macbook based on the Nvidia Ion platform running full OS X (maybe even with Wacom style pressure sensitivity), it could really go places. Apple doesn't really have anything to cater to the average home budget user market, aside from the Mac Mini (which is pretty pointless) and 13" MacBook. Hell for that size/price you might as well get a netbook or UMPC like the UMID M1.

As it is now though... meh. It's too big for your pocket, too small to justify a laptop bag. Lack of multitasking is a HUGE facepalm in my book. At least it's fully compatible with the existing library of iPhone 3GS apps.

I agree with Rekarp/TLE: biggest waste of hype ever. Apple, I am disappoint.

Doesn't Wacom use the pressure sensitivity in the pen/stylus?

I too was hoping for something more in line with a tablet Mac than a tablet iPhone, so this is really rather disappointing. I have a feeling that Metallica Man X is wrong though and that they are going to sell well. You all have to remember that we're the minority here. Think of all the people that use their computers for web surfing, email, and the occasional word processing. They buy this one tablet and they don't even need a computer at all for most of the things they need to do.

Sort of fills the netbook niche, then, albeit for about twice the cost.

Yeh, don't think this thing will do so good. I thought it was cool at first but after reading in that link, he has many good points. Ill just stick to my ipod touch, which is piratically a smaller version, that CAN fit in your pocket. Oh, and imagine typing on this thing :?
