Wiring monitor to xbox 360 power supply.

Post by weaver »

I was just wondering if any one had some information on this. I seen the 360 laptop tutorial on engadget and it look like all I had to do is solder 3 wires from the power brick to the monitor and use 360 VGA cord to connect it. Will this work? anyone know?

What ben did was he took the power supply, cut the board in half, and stuffed it in the power brick. He wired the board to the wires coming in. Where exactly, I don't know. But yes, that's what you do if you follow his tutorial.

When you split the Westinghouse monitor's board, you desolder the 5v and 12v fuse from one of the halves and sever the ground trace. It's really just a simple matter of extending these three and reconnecting them to the same spots they were originally soldered to.

Could you power a tv with the 360 power supply. (cant make question marks on my netbook) I was thinking about using this one. http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetai ... &langid=EN" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You could if the LCD takes 12v at the power connector or you find where is converts to 12v inside. You'll want to use a power supply that is at least one step up in wattage than what the xbox needs (150w to 175w, 175w to 203w).

also know that not all LCDs are created equal. The Westinghouse and gateway, that have been used before, conveniently have a single 12v and 5v line running from the monitor's power supply. I've opened monitors that have many many connections running from the power supply and not all of them are an easy 12v. You'll have to open it to find out.

Other thing that you might want to keep in mind is that TV's are usually thicker to accomodate the tuner and other components. It may not be possible to slim it very far. It's not a show stopper, but just might not be as sleek.

K is it possible to just hook the 5v, 12v and ground lines from the monitor to were the stuff inside the xbox connects to the power? Will the 360 have enough power to power the xbox and monitor? or will it fry it?

it's possible on the 12v line if you do what vskid said and get a 360 power supply that is at least one version older than the motherboard you're using. I don't have a clue what the power requirements are for the 5v line on the monitor, but the 360 power supply only gives 1A from the 5v line and it needs that for standby.

I'd really like to see how much the draw is on the monitor's 5v line and then try wiring it to a few 5v spots on the 360 motherboard so that it doesn't take too much from each spot.

2ndary question, i can run the wires from the brick to the lcd, but how do i do this without permanently tethering the power cable to the laptop, or is that the point? I noticed at least 3 instances where engadget stated "we'll explain this more in part 2/3" or "since we already did this in part 1/2" but there nothing about it. i.e. desoldering and moving the jack for the control circle and how to move the power jack to the back of the laptop. I'm not a dunce and have figured this out myself, just wondering if there is a way to work the wiring so i don't always have the bricking hanging off the back (transporting purposes)

You fashion a power plug for the monitor's power. Ben used a molex connector. He stuck the female end of the connector just above the spot where the 360's power cord plugs in and then attached the male end of the connector to the wires from the power supply. This way, you can just plug and unplug and you don't have to have the wires permanently fixed.
