You cannot. You need a GBA SP to frontlight a GBC, the DS Lite only has a backlight.

I think the phat was backlit as well. All I know for sure is that it was really hard to see anything with the back/front/whateveritwas light turned off.

Odd... I used to think this myself, and I was 100% sure I had seen frontlit DS Phat screens, but I was told by many people I was wrong, and a quick check of some spare DS Phat screens confirmed that. Do you have any evidence? Not trying to prove you wrong, just to prove myself right. :P

Just because the internet does not carry sarcasm well... Can I have a 100% non sarcastic response, and confirmation that this is indeed the truth?

Sorry, no sarcasm was intended. I was wrong and I blame cold medicine and a Voodoo woman named Phyllis.

The evil mail lady from Animal Crossing!?!?

Wait, so the phat is backlit, right? It's kind of hard to understand your guys' argument/misunderstandings.

With no sarcasm at all, the DS Phat is indeed backlit.

I am so tempted to add a winking face just to keep this going, though.

So I was right! But.. Why in the world did Nintendo include the option to turn off the backlight? It's so hard to see, even with good lighting. I wonder if it would be possible to frontlight a DS....
