Wow, knowledgegranted is probably the most spot on user here. I was just browsing but felt the need to post in here.

I've had all 3 systems this gen. I currently only own a PS3. My experiences:

Wii: The motion control is cool but gets tiring A LOT faster than a dual analog controller. Online on it is a joke, and not a real good one at that. I won't go into detail, but I sold it in May after not playing it for nearly a year.

Xbox 360:
While the failure rate remains high because at least half sold have older chipsets, retailers sell those to deplete unwanted stock and they know you might say "-Fudge- MS" and buy a new one or a PS3 when it breaks. If cooling in your room (or where ever you'll have the gaming console) isn't very good. It wouldn't be wise to play it in there. =p

Despite the hardware issues, Live is good and it's selling point. Several users have covered this actual on the head, it's features and such. It's exclusive games ranges from Halo 3, to Fable 2, to Gears of War, to Alan Wake, to Splinter Cell: Conviction (might be seeing a multiplat release), to Left 4 Dead 2 (also on PC though). Halo personally bores me, but I love Gears & L4D, but I play the latter on PC. :D

Playstation 3:
Blu-Ray (No changing discs! :D), every SKU has a hard drive, and a easier one to replace for a lower price than the 360s. It uses the standard laptop hard drive, which is a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive that runs at 5400rpm. Sony has a WIDE range of in house, 2nd party, & 3rd party exclusives like: Uncharted 2, Jak & Dexter, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance Series, SOCOM (although the developer for the series changed), MAG (And they're making this game), Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, inFamous, SlyCooper, LittleBigPlanet, White Knight Chronicles, Demon's Souls, and so on.

It's those exclusives (MGS4 actually) that got me to buy a PS3. And it does have a friend list, among several other features including: messaging, a text chat you can access while playing, wider range of codecs supported (think music and video) than the 360 IIRC, a video/voice chat (however, it can't be used while ingame), etc.

Older Multiplatform games on the 360 do out preform, out look, etc (and some still do) the PS3 versions. It's because the 360 is easier to develop for than the PS3, because Windows is the top OS and the 360's Operating System is basically a modified version of Windows XP Media Center Edition. So, they cut corners really in that regard, but most developers are too lazy or don't have the know how or have the funds to hire someone with the know how to master the PS3.

However, someone with the know how (Naughty Dog) can show you exactly what the Playstation 3 is capable of with a game like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

How do you know what to purchase. Well, for one. Look at it like this, if your room ever gets hot... you might be having some problems with your 360. If you want wireless, prepare to shell out an extra 100 dollars for your Xbox 360 to get the adapter. If you need a hard drive, don't buy the 360 Arcade. And if you like to play online, and you'd like to use pretty much every feature of Xbox Live, be prepared to pay for it. Since the PS3 is now more affordable and has free online, we can wave looking at it's price and move on to...

EXCLUSIVES!
:D

Look at the exclusives both consoles offer, not just what I've listed here because both consoles have more than that. Play them at friends, look at what's coming out in the next year, etc.

With all that said, either way you lean, make sure it's what you want to play. Since that's the idea after all. Who knows, you might buy the other one later too. :p
