N64 Questions for portable...

Post by Willrandship »

I want to make a portable N64. as far as I can tell, I have everything I need:

GC 5" screen
N64
7.2 V Ni-mh from portable dvd player.
Vacuum foriming table in process (hopefully)

I just had a couple of Ideas for simplified production, and I want a reality check.

1. Instead of rewiring the cartridge port, why not take apart a cartridge and solder to that? It seems like it would be much less cramped workspace.

2. Could I use the battery in such a way as to be rechargable thru a plug? I believe I can find how the voltage runs for charging.

3. It would be nice to make it so that it fits into the GC screen that I have, as I currently have a car-worthy setup for any setup with my inverter.

Thanks,
William.

Oh, btw my dad says that the cartridge connector looks like a standard type, so it should be possible to get a right angle connector for it.

Actually, the cart slot is not very standard. You can use SCSI cable to relocate it, but nothing else has been found that fits really.

If you hardwire a game cart you will only be able to play one game, and it will take up more space than just relocating the cart slot.

To charge your batteries, just put a barrel jack matching your charger plug (or whatever plug your charger has) and a DPDT switch to switch between battery to the system and battery to the charge port.

Let us see a pic of your screen. If it is a PS1 screen recased as a GC screen, e.g the round casing, you won't fit an n64 in there with batteries and the screen. Sorry. Otherwise, we need a pic to know.

Okay, just a couple of things...
1. I don't want the screen connected to the n64, I want it to clip on like it currently does with the gamecube, something like this.

---------
| Screen|
--------- Clips and Hinge
----| |----
| N64 |
------------------
The mempak slot could be mounted under the screen mount, so you could still play such games as Quest 64 or Gauntlet, that use it.
Buttons and joystick would go into jutting space, and controller ports would too. Expansion pak would be built in (of course)

Aww man It ruined my perfectly spaced text....it should show a square chunk of n64 case going into screen mount...

Oh and I had a mistake about the cartridge thing...don't know what I was thinking with wiring one in, unless you had an sram 1 of course, but i still think that you can get 50-pin connectors of that size, and even at a right angle!
