How would i go about it i'm trying to decide between a gamecube in car screen and a dsi top screen.
pros and cons:
gamcube screen pros:
runs to the n64 without rewireing
a good enough size
built in speakers and volume toggle
gamecube screen cons:
inferior back lighting feature(possibly)
will still need battery rewiring
ads to overall with of system
casing will need to be removed inorder to fit the n64(not exactly a downside)
DSi screen pros:
good brightness control
high quality screen
length could decrease case width
DSi screen cons:
no built in speaker
back light only works when wired in properly
n64 needs to be rewired to work with screen
no built in speakers
may be small in comparison to the rest of unit

Re: DSi screen on a N64 portable
Actually, the DSi screen can't be used. At all. And it's not a "high quality screen", it's less than the resolution of the N64.
Re: DSi screen on a N64 portable
Technically, you could use a DSi screen, by extracting the digital RGB as described here (without converting it to analog), and sending it straight to the screen, but it's never been done before, at least to my knowledge. It's much more work than "rewiring", though.

Re: DSi screen on a N64 portable
Also, using a smaller screen will not really change the size of your portable much, considering the size of the n64 mobo.
Re: DSi screen on a N64 portable
What Spinout said, you'd probably need an FPGA.
In my fantasy where I make most of a N64 inside an FPGA, I would make it support PSP screens. Until then stick to analog.
