What do you think? (dimensions?)

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

What do you think? (dimensions?)

Post by Ollie »

Hey guys (and girls). I have been reading these forums for a couple days now and now want to try to build my own portable. I decided to go for the SNES since its so bad ass =). I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the SNES2's (mini SNES) main board would fit in something this size 1 and 2 (with room for a 4" or 5" PSONE screen, batteries and so on)? Very crude drawing i know lol but I'm still in the thinking out loud phase!

I want to try to keep it about the same size as one of the lord of the rings extended edition DVD boxes. You can see a lil question mark in the pic .. thats just there as i have no fuggin clue how I'm going to manage getting the carts to slot load like that (i hate the ones i have seen with the cart sticking way out there).

I was also thinking of mounting a Super Flash 64M Cart internally but i cant find any info on how it works ..... i.e. what roms i could run or if i would be able to save. Prolly wouldn't be able to run games that need special chips.

Edit: Found some more info on the flash cards here and here. Looks like you can save!! but Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island (U) (V1.1) and Super Mario Kart (U) [!] would be a no go :( :( .. but i still think having an internal cart would make a much cleaner looking portable.

I'm surprised that save works as well as that GBAX shop guy claims, I would have thought that the chips used to store saves were different from game to game, which would make it a major hassle to implement. The flash cart doesn't have the 2 extra pin bits either side of the main cartridge, so anything that uses those will be broken. No Yoshi's island, Starfox, Mario Kart, Stunt Race FX, Doom, Megaman X2/3... and the others that I can't remember...

So.... back to my original question ... I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the SNES2's (mini SNES) main board would fit in something this size 1 and 2 (with room for a 4" or 5" PSONE screen, batteries and so on)? Very crude drawing i know lol but I'm still in the thinking out loud phase!

would like to get an opinion from somone that may have built a SNESp before i bid on the parts :)

I think what i may do .. is re-buy my favorite carts from ebay/pawn shops, take the PCB out of the actual carts and either make custom (smaller) carts or wrap them in electrical tape and run them internally. Maybe make a small door or something. hehe =)

The board behind it is pretty much round and has a diameter of about 5.75".
