Vacuum Forming?

Can i use the DIY method of vacuum forming to create the case for these projects? Im more specifically talking about the method using your oven to heat the plastic and use a shop vac to form it over the molds. I know some of you had said that vacuum cleaners wont work but a couple of the youtube videos shows it working just fine. The question is is the plastic a thinner one then what is needed?
